Road Inspectors Wanted
We would like for members of the community to volunteer to be a road inspector for the shire. The role will involve providing a quarterly report to the shire detailing the conditions of your road and any repairs required in your area. We would like inspectors across the shire, so if you would like to get involved, please send you nomination to the CEO, Matthew Gilfellon via email ceo@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au, through the shire office or via SMS 0429 634 012.

Bain Estate Community Meeting
In September 2014, a Community Meeting was held for Council to receive feedback on how to set up the Bain Estate Future Fund. Following this meeting, Council developed the guidelines for the Bain Estate Future Fund. The Future Fund has now operated with these guidelines for three years, including a first pilot year.
Council now wishes to review how the Future Fund operates and wishes to receive community feedback. A community meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th March at 7:00pm at the Kukerin Hall. All community members are encouraged to attend.

Fines Enforcement Registry
The shire has now signed up to the Fines Enforcement Registry in order to provide a larger deterrent to the fines that we currently issue. This means that if you fail to pay a fine that has been issued by the shire, you may end up having your driver’s licence suspended until the fine is paid.

Responsible Dog Ownership
During February, a ranger representing the shire will be visiting homes in Dumbleyung and Kukerin to talk to owners about responsible dog ownership. The purpose of this visit is to inform you of your rights and obligations so that you know the right thing to do.

In this weeks sport update:
- Kukerin Bowling Club
- Dumbleyung Tennis Club
- Dumbleyung Bowling Club

Kukerin Bowling Club

Kukerin’s game at Newdegate last Saturday February 24, proved to be a cliff hanger, with the final result being decided on the final bowl of the afternoon. The game commenced with Newdegate away to a good lead on three rinks, and Kukerin leading by a small margin on the fourth. As the game progressed, two Kukerin rinks began to gain a lead, whilst the third was locked in a titanic struggle, and Newdegate had a commanding lead on the fourth rink.

In the final stages of the match, three rinks had finished, and Kukerin held a one shot lead for the aggregate. The fourth rink locked together on 19 shots apiece, and the skips played their last two bowls of the game. Newdegate holding four shots in the head, Kukerin’s skip played a magical bowl and trailed the jack to take shot. The Newdegate skip attempted to dislodge the bowl but missed narrowly. Kukerin’s skip then drew another very good shot. The last bowl of the day saw Newdegate skip spring the jack, but was unlucky to have it move to a Kukerin bowl almost alongside a Newdegate bowl. This left Kukerin winning by two shots and three rink wins resulting in a 7—1 win. A huge result because if the Kukerin skip had not been unable to convert, the result would have been a win to Newdegate 6—2.

Sunday produced more drama! Whilst playing the second end of the game at Kukerin, where the home side were hosting Karlgarin, the heavens opened, and within minutes the green was flooded. However, after some effort to assist with the drainage issue, play resumed about an hour later. The game proved to be a close contest in the early stages however, in the closing stages, Kukerin were able to win on all four rinks, resulting in an 8—0 win.  This leaves Kukerin in second position, and they will host Kondinin in the semi-final to be played on the March 17.

We wish our two Kukerin team’s good bowling and luck, when they travel to Perth for the annual Country Week championships next weekend.  Good luck to Tim Adams, who will be playing for the country All Stars against a metropolitan side on Thursday evening.

Dumbleyung Tennis Club

It was a ‘do or die’ effort to snare second spot on the ladder, and have a home semi-final in a fortnights time. Sunday February 25, the Dumbleyung Pennant team played Newdegate at home. The weather decided to adhere to weather forecast predictions and pelted down. Sometimes clearing for 5 minute intervals, some games commenced but then another break. The first afternoon tea at 1.20pm whilst watching the lightning and rain display was enjoyed.

Then came a break, which lasted for the remainder of the day, albeit with very long, tight tiebreaker matches and a few 7-5's being played.  Congratulations goes to new recruit Daniel McDougall who played his 1st Pennant and won 5 sets - this would have to be a potential record breaking event for the men, so well done Daniel! The added bonus to spurring him on was lovely Petronella and daughter, Maggie who witnessed his win.

Five set winners to most players with Greg Bairstow & Glenn Ball -4, Chloe McDougall and Julie Ramm - being drawn, once again to play singles. Young Harry ( only 24), Captain of Newdegate thanked all, and commented that a few of the Dumbleyung players form will need to be looked at -although he was extremely pleased with the sets his team won.

Throughout the rain (no hail), lightning and sunshine a great day was had by all.

Final scores - Dumbleyung 29sets/195games to Newdegate 5sets/104games.  Thank you to all supporters who rocked up, with Howie Ward finding it strange not needing to collect containers and tennis racquets when it was time to leave - Howie is resting for the next few months!!

Local Dumbleyung identity is Baton Bearer!

28/2/2018

Local, Margie Ward, has achieved a lifelong dream! Margie was nominated to participate as baton bearer, in the current Queen’s Baton Relay last weekend, in regional WA.

Nominated by Denise Patterson, Margie was first contacted in July 2017 and notified that she would be a reserve relay runner. Forward to January 27 Margie received another email, advising she had a confirmed place in the relay and her uniform was in the mail!

Completing a lifelong dream of participating in an elite sporting event (originally a youthful dream of participating in a sport at the Commonwealth or Olympic Games though later in life envisioned volunteering at games) Margie carried the 1.5kilo baton for 4 minutes in Bridgetown last Friday, February 23. Surrounded by family and friends the excitement and joy was evident as Margie passed the baton onto the next bearer.

Well done Margie on completing a life goal and representing Dumbleyung in the great, Queen’s Baton Relay!
