In this week's Sports News...
- Kukerin Bowling Club
- Dumbleyung Social Bowls

Kukerin Bowling Club

Last weekends double header of pennant bowls proved successful for the club.   On Saturday we travelled to Karlgarin. The game was played in very hot conditions early on with a bit of cloud cover cooling things down later in the afternoon. The game commenced with one Kukerin rink jumping to an early lead and the other three rinks were locked into a tense battle, however the Karlgarin rink who were down early lifted to make it into an intense battle across the green.  The match progressed and one Kukerin rink took control while the other three rinks were too close to predict a winner. In the concluding stages of these three games, two Kukerin rinks gained control while the other one came down to a last end shootout which was won by Karlgarin by two shots which left the final result in a win to Kukerin 7—1.  The bus trip home proved quite a hilarious event early in proceedings. Modern technology being a problem for the driver.

Sunday saw Kukerin at home to Kulin in the final match of the home and away season. The game was played in warm conditions with a breeze running down and across the green which made for tricky conditions at times.  Kukerin gained control on two rinks early with the third rink in a close battle and the fourth down by a small margin. The match continued in this vein and in the later stages three Kukerin rinks were in control with the fourth close behind until the final end when they snatched five shots to win narrowly which gave Kukerin an 8—0 win.    The final ladder positions for the season are; Kukerin 69,  Kondinin 67, Newdegate 45, Kulin 32.5, Karlgarin 17, Lake Grace 9.5.

The semi-finals are to be played on week-end of 16th and 17th March for ladies and men’s pennant competitions. On Saturday 16th the first semi-final will be played at Lake Grace.  Kulin ladies versus Kondinin ladies, and in the men’s competition Kondinin will be against Newdegate.   Sunday 17th the second semi-final is to be played at Kulin. The ladies competition sees Newdegate versus Lake Grace and the men's event will see Kukerin against Kulin.

Good bowling and luck to the two Kukerin men's teams who will travel to Perth to play in the annual mens Country Week championships commencing this week on Friday 1st March.

LAST CALL -Do you have approval to run your home based business/hobby?
Talk to us before the end of February 2019 so we can help you avoid retrospective fees! Thank you to those who have already made contact as this helps us help you!
Of late the shire has been reviewing it’s Town Planning Scheme in conjunction with our Town Planner which has prompted a timely reminder for small businesses to check they are approved under our Town Planning Scheme.
The state government has rules in place to ensure that the amenity of different areas are protected, consumers are protected and businesses who must invest significant amounts of money into meeting the requirements are protected. This means that if the residents activity involves a commercial transaction of any sort, even if they consider it a ‘hobby’; under the planning scheme they will need to talk to Joe Douglas to see if it is allowed. The Shire of Dumbleyung want's to assist hobby's and businesses in achieving this compliance and are therefore allowing retrospective development application fees at the standard fee rate until the end of February 2019. Any retrospective applications after this date will incur the normal retrospective fee which is three time the standard fee.
If the business/hobby involves food, you will also need to meet the health requirements. There are currently no residential kitchens approved in the shire. More information on residential kitchen requirements or alternatives (E.G. Hall kitchen hire $20 half day or $40 full day) is available at the shire.
If you want to try running a business, you can talk to us about some low risk initiatives to assist in staying compliant and getting started. Current initiatives the shire has to help small businesses/hobbies are the Mini Mall, cooking from Town Halls, and if you are looking at providing a service but don’t have a place to operate from we are keen to hear from you!
CONTACT: We are here to help you! For more information please contact Nicole on 9863 4012 orntaylor@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au who can help you with your compliance to ensure your business/hobby meets our Town Planning Scheme.

Tarin Rock Wildflower Book Update

27/2/2019

I have just returned from Tarin Rock Nature Reserve and Tarin Rock Water Reserve. I am still on the look-out for the big trees such as salmon gum (Eucalyptus salmonophloia), red morrel (E. longicornis) and blue mallet (E. gardneri), which should be coming into flower at this time of the year. I am getting side-tracked by the profuse flowering mallees and the masses of flower or mallee beetles, honey bees, and ants visiting these. At least it provides an opportunity to release the crick in my neck from looking up to the big trees with binoculars. It will be a challenge to find trees with flowering branches low enough for me to take a sample. I have had some luck with the silver mallet (E. falcata) which is currently in full flower. The closely related silver mallee (E. dorrienii) flowered in early summer, but the mallet starts later. Their buds look very similar. I also found a black and red jewel beetle, possibly Temognatha ducalis.

My next visit will be 10 to 13 March. If anybody wants to come along, let me know and we can meet up on site. If you have any questions, you can reach me by email at tarinrockbook@gmail.com or by phone on 0439978550.

A community cookbook doesn’t work without the community so we’re asking YOU! to help us by sending in your favourite recipes big or small! From your ultimate curried egg sandwich mixture, to the best scones in town, easy scrolls, pasta, curry, pies you name it we want to receive it! If you have a family secret recipe that doesn’t need to be secret anymore or a dish from your families heritage we want to hear from you!

Proceeds from the book will help us to host cooking (or similar) workshop/s later in the year! To submit your recipes please email them to admin@dumbleyungcrc.com. Be sure your recipe includes all the necessary ingredients, a full method and if you have any photos we want to receive these too!
