Kukerin Bowling Club

Kukerin hosted Kulin for the final pennant game of the home and away season last Saturday.  The game began under grey leaden skies in intermittent light rain showers.  Two rinks from each team gained control early in what looked likely to be a very close finish, however at the halfway period of the contest the rain came in and the match was abandoned resulting in each team gaining four points.  The final points on pennant table at the conclusion of season reads; Kukerin 63, Kondinin 54.5, Kulin 38.5, Newdegate 36, Karlgarin 28, Lake Grace 20.  The first and second semi-finals will be played at Newdegate and Kukerin on Saturday March 7.

The South Central Arunga Bowling League singles championships for men and ladies were played at Kulin on Sunday. Kukerin’s representatives were Bev Davidson and Ross Ditchburn.  Whilst Bev played well she didn’t advance to the final, however Ross won his section and lost the final in a high class game to Lake Grace’s Geoff Sabourne.

We wish our two teams travelling to the annual country week championships in Perth next week-end good bowling.  Social bowls next week-end will be organised by phone for those at home
Welcome home to Ian and Claudia from their trip overseas.

Kukerin Primary School
  • A big thankyou to everyone for the organisation and planning behind a successful week of swimming lessons - in particular, Deb for her overall coordination, Tracy for being the swimming supervisor and to Trish and Mrs Faulkner for driving the students out and from Dumbleyung each day. A big thankyou to our parents for having your children so organised each day and a big thank you to all our students who, on the whole, participated enthusiastically and were great representatives for our school.
  • Kukerin Primary School is continuing on last year’s efforts to phase in a whole school Explicit Instruction Approach. Explicit Instruction Approach is a researched and evidence based with excellent results for student being the primary outcome. Explicit instruction aims to:
    • Improve students’ performance in literacy and numeracy
    • Improve students’ progression and attainment across all learning areas
    • Implement a structured, sequential and skills based curriculum
    • Ensure consistent instruction practices across the school
    • Increase student engagement and therefore lower opportunities for behavioural issues
  • Volunteers are required to assist at the swimming carnival on Friday 13 March. If you can assist throughout the day, please contact Deb Doney at the school by this Friday 28 February. It would be appreciated if all parents could assist with the packing up of equipment at the conclusion of the carnival.
  • We want to start a kids club for children who love drama and acting and all things creative for pre-primary to Year 6 students. Proposed day in Term 1 would be Mondays from 2:45pm to 3:30pm for four weeks only. If you are interested please contact Tara Green on 0427 333 171

The assembly will start at 2pm followed by afternoon tea in the Art Room.
  • Swimming lessons last week were a big success! Well done to the swim teachers who committed to Dumbleyung ensuring our students received this vital instruction, as some schools within the region are struggling to find adequate teacher numbers. Thank you Tracy for coordinating this for our area.
  • It is with disappointment that the very enjoyable Drumbeat in the Senior Room has been cancelled. Unfortunately, Palmerston Health accidentally made an error in allowing us to participate in their zone.
  • This weekend is a long-weekend with Monday being a Public Holiday. School will resume on Tuesday February 3rd, with the Senior Year 5/6 class leaving for Camp Kulin and with Year 5/6 students from Darken where ‘Leadership’ will be the intentional focus. BAIN ESTATE APPLICATIONS CLOSE 3 APRIL 2020 at 12noon
Bain Estate Applications close 3 April 2020 at 12noon.  For those applying, please remember to contact Mary-Ann Davidson before submitting your application on 9863 4012.
Further information can be found athttps://www.dumbleyung.wa.gov.au/bain-estate-future-fund
In May 2013 the Shire of Dumbleyung was the sole beneficiary to the Estate of Ian Bain. The will contained a wish that the money be used to assist sporting groups, emergency organisations and hospital services within the shire; however the wish does not impose an obligation to restrict spending to these three areas. The intention of Council is for the Bain Estate Distribution to be used for the benefit of the shire over a thirty year period of time. The aim is to distribute the money to the community in similarly equal distributions over the thirty year period, taking into account the time value of money.

East Dumbleyung declared water deficient
A 'Water Deficiency Declaration' is a government response to safeguard the commercial interests of farmers during very dry periods. A declaration occurs when a group of five or more farmers require water from an off-farm source and must travel greater than a 40-kilometre radius from their farm to get this.
A declaration requires the government to provide water for livestock needs at a central storage point.
The process leading to a declaration of 'water deficiency' involves a local government making a formal request to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation which, after consulting with the Department of Agriculture and Food, makes a recommendation to the Minister for Water.
The Minister has announced the Water Deficiency Declaration for East Dumbleyung.  Water is currently being carted into tanks located at Nenke Park in Kukerin.
Farmers who have registered their stock numbers will be contacted by the Shire via SMS when the water supply is ready to be accessed.
This non-potable water supply is available for registered users only under the Water Deficiency Declaration – for emergency stock water only. Signs will be placed on the tanks to advise this.  Farmers can be added to this list however they must contact Claudia Hadlow at the Landcare Office on 0429 612 447 or 9863 4225 or the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation on 98410100.
The water supply will be monitored; however, Farmers will be asked to work together to advise each other of tank levels or have allocated days to access the water.  If supplies are not keeping up or there are carting issues, please let the Shire know immediately.  Also please report if you sell livestock or receive rain and no-longer need to access the water from Nenke Park.

Habits, Routines and our Wellbeing

26/2/2020

Picture
We are creatures of habit and routine, so how does this affect our wellbeing?  Our wellbeing is often described as a state of being content, healthy, secure, safe and happy. To have good wellbeing requires planning, making decisions, having a sense of purpose, a sense of hope, something to look forward to and then some luck.

The routine part of our life can contain components that are monotonous, predictable, regular, scheduled and sometimes become habitual. One of my habits is watching the 7pm ABC news and weather (when not on the road), checking emails and checking my Twitter feed. The first thing I do when on a break is to stop this.

How do our daily routines affect our wellbeing? We know there are some things we must do every day just to survive, but mixing it up, changing our daily routines and breaking certain habits, even for a short time, can have positive effects on our overall wellbeing. Maybe this is the reason why we have holidays?

Some things that we can do that may challenge our habits and routines are:
  • Treat our holiday as a circuit breaker – even if our holiday is at home, we can do this by changing our TV watching patterns, how we deal with social media (i.e. turn it off for a while). Try the RRRRs; Relax, Rest, Rehydrate and Reconnect (visit friends/family/neighbours you haven’t seen in a while.
  • Do unplanned activities – a lot of research is being done in this area and how it can help prevent the onset of dementia. Do some unplanned activities such as;
  • Join a club that we have never been to before (perhaps a men’s shed).
  • Start a hobby, develop an interest.
  • Try doing nothing for a while (some mindfulness). This is good for our wellbeing as it acts as a recharge for all our chemicals in our body and can help us get the balance right.
  • Exercise of any kind is beneficial. We don’t have to run marathons or go to a gym (sometimes that may help) but simply get moving in any way is a good thing. It may involve joining a sporting club that you have never belonged to, walking with a friend.
  • Volunteering. The world is run by volunteers. Volunteering is often a gateway to many other opportunities in life that we may never have thought of opening, literally a two-way process. Try a short stint with a group during the holidays; you may be surprised.
Primarily we are in charge of our own wellbeing. For me the following quote epitomises a great philosophy to life and may help us reflect on the habits and routines we currently have.

…live your life well, do no harm, help where able, always try to find common ground and enjoy every single day…

Enjoy the break and welcome to the year 2020.

Are Your Business and Staff Chemical Safe?

26/2/2020

Picture
Make sure your business and staff are fulfilling their duty of care when handling chemicals on your farm or at your business with an AusChem Accreditation.  Formerly known as a ChemCert WA Accreditaiton, AusChem Accreditation is provided by local TAFE organisations and we’ve teamed up with Katanning TAFE to host locally in Dumbleyung.

A two day course is all it takes to become accredited and will be held in Dumbleyung on Monday March 30 and Tuesday March 31. The course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to manage risks associated with chemical use and to understand your obligations of duty of care, quality assurance and environmental management.

A practical course, participants will learn how to improve their integrated pest management programmes and to better choose the right chemicals for the job, and how these can be applied more accurately. The accreditation is valid for five years and is designed for people who will be spraying chemicals without supervision. Reaccreditation must also be actioned within three years of expiry.

Upon completion participants will receive a Statement of Attainment with the following national accredited units,
  • AHCCHM307 – Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases
  • AHCCHM304 - Transport and store chemicals
The minimum of 10 people has been reached and places are still available.

All paperwork needs to be submitted to the Katanning TAFE to lock in a lecturer to host the course in Dumbleyung – if you’ve received your paperwork please be sure to complete and submit.
The two day AusChem Accreditation costs $643.80 per person and unfortunately we’ve reached our capacity for the reaccreditation (if you’d like to add your name to the waiting list for re-accreditation please touch base with the CRC).

If you are interested in upskilling not only yourself but also any employees to ensure your business is being chemical safe, please contact the CRC by calling 9863 4829 or email admin@dumbleyungcrc.com.
