Meet our friend Tara.

She likes long walks on the beach, enjoying coffee from along came Henry and reading a book or two from the Dumbleyung Library.

Do you share any similarities with Tara? Then you could join Tara and become a friend of the CRC.

Our friends volunteer their time and they're pretty darn cool!

We're looking for a number of friends to join a roster of a few hours a week/fortnight to assist with Library tasks, collating the weekly Quack Chat and any upcoming CRC initiatives.

Friends of the CRC are also asked to volunteer their time whilst staff are away to ensure tourists/community members can access CRC services and the Bluebird display.

As our thank you, our 'friends' are invited to enjoy a barista coffee from along came Henry whilst on the job - it's that cruisy! Plus, receive a free Individual CRC Membership!

If  you're interested in becoming a friend, please fill in the below form with the day/time which suits you best.

Championship Singles Plate

On Monday March 21 two of Dumbleyung greatest ladies bowlers went head to head in the Championship Singles Plate. After over an hour of play Lola Hannah defeated Liz Dare, 25 to 16. Umpire Audrey Bateup commented it became close towards the end and was overall a good game.

After a strong month of cricket Kukerin-Dumbleyung boarded the bus and made their way to Cuballing to play perennial Grand Finalists Cuballing. The mood on the bus was a mix of nervousness and hope as the team pondered the game ahead. The coin toss was won by Cuballing and with trepidation they chose to bat.

The start of the game is always important and with Cuballing having an aggressive line-up it was likely that the upper hand would quickly be established. Unfortunately it went to Cuballing with their openers getting off to a flyer. Just as quickly as they had started the partnership was broken with Scott Gray taking a brilliant one handed catch while half way through his follow through. The first wicket did not bring a second and with the runs still flowing the captain turned to Conan Holder and Pete Downey. Although bowling well they could not stem the runs and by drinks Cuballing had batted themselves into a good position. Like the previous week the Kukerin-Dumbleyung boys needed to dig deep to get the game under control and to enable this the spin twins of Dame Leo and Kalan Joyce came on to bowl. The change in bowling had the desired effect of lowering the run rate and increasing the pressure on the Cuballing batsmen. The wickets then started to fall and with the spinners proving to be effective they continued in until late in the innings. In the last five overs the opening bowlers came back and did a great job of finishing off the innings. A good fight back from the team restricted Cuballing to 8/188, a tough total to chase but not impossible.

The batting plan was simple. Both openers bat for 45 overs, score about a hundred each and the game should be won. Despite the simpleness of the plan it still would not be easy with Cuballing boasting a strong bowling line-up. The plan started well with Dame Leo and Matthew Gilfellon getting off to a solid start, keeping out the openers and scoring at a reasonable rate. Cuballing went straight to negative tactics, placing men out on the boundary to stem the run rate. The first milestone of the partnership, facing off the opening bowlers, was within reach when the first wicket fell. This started a procession of batsmen coming and going, not at a rate that would qualify as a ‘Parrot Parade’ but a rate implying a team showing fight but slightly outgunned. This fight was assisted by Pete Joyce providing a backbone to the innings, with an at times guarding and at times counter-attacking innings. One man though was not enough to beat the Cuballing attack and the last wicket fell for 103, well short of the required total.

Above: David Head bowling and Pete Joyce in background
The team was despondent and in shock at the abrupt finish of the season. Despite lacking the required polish all it was hard not to concentrate on the negative tactics or seemingly unjust decisions of umpires. Part way through the bus trip at home the talk had changed, discussion of the highlights of the game and of the season abound. With the rising of the sun in the morning so did the hope of the team, determined to go one better next year.

Despite not winning the grand final this season has had plenty of positives. Firstly is the emergence of a couple of young batsmen (Pete Joyce and Ryan Taylor) who have shown plenty of skill and fight during the season as well as a young all-rounder (Conan Holder) and young bowler (Pete Downey) who will hopefully be around in the future. Secondly is the form of some of the veterans who have led the team with bat and ball and will hopefully be around to continue to do so over at least the next few years. Most importantly though is that the club had plenty of people committing to playing, a fantastic group of supporters and helpers and much enjoyment is had by all.

Well done to the Kukerin-Dumbleyung Cricket Club on a great season! We look forward to reading Jiminiy Cricket match commentary next season!

Picture
This is a general notice to alert Farmers to the dangers of the 'prickly poison' plant (pictured right) which has caused stock deaths in the last few weeks in the Shire.

The plant is most poisonous following any rainfall event which initiates new growth or flowering. Please keep a look out for any unusual plants growing in paddocks that are stocked.

If in doubt please get them identified if you are at all suspicious of the plant. The Landcare Office can assist with sourcing information and can be contacted on  98634225.

The new yacht club facility provided an excellent location for the districts' Palm Sunday service conducted by Canon Carol Morgan from Bunbury. Dayle Lloyd and Peter Cumming provided the music. Parishioners attended from Lake Grace, Wagin, Williams and Dumbleyung.

The 60 strong crowd which included many children saw the baptism of cousins Eloise Bartram and Grady Ford. After the service a shared lunch was enjoyed and many of the visitors took the opportunity to do some sightseeing.

Positive comments were made on the new signage at the lake.
