Fundraising Opportunity – Catering for Council Meetings
Community/Sporting Groups or Individuals are invited to put their names forward for catering for one or more of the 2018 Council Meetings.  (If we have a large number of responses then it may mean that some groups/individuals may only be able to cater once and dates are awarded on first in best dressed.)  Caterers are asked to provide a main course and dessert for a minimum of 10 people and are paid $32 per head for February through to November.  The December Christmas Dinner can be up to $40 per head depending on the menu and expressions of interest are sought for this closer to the date.  If you are looking for a little extra income then this is a simple and easy opportunity for local groups to raise funds.
We require caterers for the following meetings:
  • 17 May 2018
  • 18 October 2018
To register your interest for the 2018 roster please contact Zoey Eyre on email zeyre@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au or phone 98634012 with your preferred months as soon as possible.  Groups/Individuals will be contacted asap with confirmation of months.

As a bit of a recap on the project, we are working with the concept of the photos being of settling families, sporting groups and some interesting farm practices and structures. We are also documenting all families past and present in the ‘Families’ list. The majority of the sign content has been compiled from previous history publications.
The aim of this project is to document our history in a way that is also interesting to our future generations and tourists as part of a drive trail.
You are welcome to forward this to anyone who may be interested in a final read.
Don't forget we now have a new history site where you can help by uploading your family photos and information, visit https://www.dumbleyung.wa.gov.au/history
Thank you and have a fantastic day.

Works Requests
We have been working to ensure that there is a robust Works Request system in place at the shire. We do ask that Works Requests be put in writing, and this can be done at the shire office, via post/fax/email or through our website (which you can access on your smartphone).
It is not a Councillors role to be receiving works request, and as per Council’s Policy, any works requested by a Councillor is treated exactly the same as a request coming into the office, so it is quicker just to come straight to the office!
Submit Shire Works Request here:https://www.dumbleyung.wa.gov.au/worksrequestform
Submit Private Works Request here:https://www.dumbleyung.wa.gov.au/privateworksrequestform

What happens to your recycling?
Speaking with our recycling contractor, plastics that are 1-2 are being recycled in China and everything else that is not plastic is being recycled in Australia. Currently China has stopped taking plastics that are numbered 3-7. Our contractor is stockpiling these until a solution is found. As this is a problem across Australia, there will hopefully be a local solution developed.
Below is a story from Katanning Landcare. They conducted a tour of our recycling contractors facility.

Need to bounce off some energy this school holidays? Then look no further than Kukerin! The main street of Kukerin has changed slightly with a big and colourful jumping pillow now located in between the Kukerin Hotel and The Kukerin town Hall on Scaddan Street.

An initiative of the Kukerin townscape, a sub committee of the Shire of Dumbleyung, the jumping pillow has been welcomed by many! A family friendly space there is endless bouncing fun on the 14m x 9m pillow which automatically inflates at 7am and deflates at 9pm each day.

The jumping pillow is one addition to the ongoing project of creating a fun, family friendly space for all to enjoy. Make sure you take some time this school holidays to check it out!

Lakeview Golf Club

Opening Day for Lakeview Golf Club, sponsored by Spock-Graham Taylor of Elders was a resounding success on Saturday April 21.  Graham couldn't make it this year due to football commitments, (Scribe thought it might be because of his mighty horses running) but we all thank you for your great sponsorship it is very much appreciated.

The first hit of the day was taken by President, Eric Gossage, who seemed a little bit nervous with newcomers, overseas visitors and regulars giving advice, but as usual Eric hit a great shot, not landing on the green like his wife the previous week, but it was okay considering the pressure applied.  The course was in good condition, with lots of roll on the fairway and the greens fairly even for putting which made for most teams paring the course.  Eventual winners Louisa Dare, Paul Ward, Bob Hannah, Eric Gossage with 59 3/4, new player Louisa will be coming back to continue her good form due to the boys treating her so nicely and helping her adapt to playing golf, "It was a pleasure to play with the boys" Louisa said.  Won't be there next week as she will be wearing the green uniform doing community service at the lake for 2 days.

Runners-up Jamie Dare, John Lee, Tamara Bartram 60 1/6 - new player John Lee was very impressive on his 1st outing and thankfully keeping the team in the running with his great chips and putting.  He is working on his wayward tee shots with the ball quite often straying into the bush, but is certainly on the right track as he normally found it like all men seem to do.  Watch out as I think his aim now is to win the men's championship and be like his mother, Shirley Porter who the women's in 1978.  He was quite impressed with Jamie's absolutely incredible shots from out of the bush and landing on or near the green, also the few straight hits  landing miles up the fairway - out of sight and really unbeatable. A few sliced shots into the water with the ball just floating off into the distance.  Novelties were shared by all teams.

Overseas visitors and cousins of Margie & Howie - John and Suzanne Hemstock from Calgary enjoyed our fantastic golf course, playing on the sand greens for the 1st time.  John, who plays off about a 14, did check what the dress code was before, arriving in casual attire like us all.   Good luck with the rest of your travels. Thank you to Lee Smith and Eric Gossage for the lime being spread over the course, and Howie, Paul and Margie Ward for the 3 years of cropping for our Golf club.  Also to all the men who have been involved in the new shed which is a work of Art in progress.

Next week will be the 1st Stroke - Qualifying round, MM and sponsored by Sportspower Katanning - Ashley & Louise Clarke.  Names in by 12.00.  Subs are due - $100, $15 if you use the Buggy room, fixtures are available.  It is $5 to play and 50c for the birdie hole if interested.  Any queries re subs our Treasurer is Paul Ward, President- Eric Gossage, Captains Jamie Dare, Tamara Bartram and Secretary - Margie Ward, the Boss of all.

Social Media and maintaining the balance

24/4/2018

At Regional Men’s Health we are always promoting social wellbeing and connectedness through appropriate communication and social networks because we are all social creatures at heart. However, in some ways social media is taking over as the predominant form of social connection, especially with younger blokes. This isn’t totally a bad thing, there’s a lot to be said for being able to open a group chat with your mates and stay engaged with your friends even if you’re working or studying a long way from home. Social media is a form of social activity and can be very helpful, especially in maintaining friendships and as a convenient way to organize real world activities. So social media isn’t this other world as it sometimes gets characterized but can be a simple extension of already existing social groups and dynamics.

Therefore, we must be vigilant and mindful of living in the here and now and staying connected to others. This is particularly important for blokes and must be maintained through the age-old channels of community. That can be the local sporting club, either participating or watching with a friend or simply having a drink/cuppa with our neighbour and dropping in on our mates.

These are some ways to stay present in the physical world that avoid the issues that the use of social media can raise, especially if we are young. These issues unfortunately are in most cases the result of deliberate programming and design by the creators of the tech companies. That’s because Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat amongst others make their money based on advertising; it’s their goal to maximise the attention that you give to their platforms. Knowing that people are more engaged by negative emotion; things that cause us to feel outrage, anxiety, tribalism and envy are often highlighted or even manufactured to reflect the worst aspects of our nature to monopolise our attention.

It’s well-known that on social media we get shunted into our own echo chambers, socially and politically. We are also taught to value internet points that can be withheld from us, we’re shown the highlight reel of other people’s lives which we compare to our own day to day. As the saying goes “comparison is the enemy of happiness’ and young people especially are inundated with examples of lives that seem better than their own, with political information that outrages them and then the deliberate delaying of likes and positive attention on their own posts. It’s no surprise that social media can be a place where young people feel more isolated and less social.

So, what does this mean for blokes that are rightfully worried by this technology and how it affects us? Well the answer is not to abandon it, instead we must understand its limitations and its consequences while using it to its best purpose. That means instead of looking at people’s holiday pictures for hours, taking pictures of every meal or reading the latest Donald Trump controversy, use it to remember birthdays, organise a barbecue with your friends, to keep track of what music festivals are coming up and other simple activities that bring you closer to people, not feeling further away.

Pictured above L-R: J.Justins, C.Justins. C.Smith, A.Knight and daughter Kenzie, E.Edwards and son George and K.Moran and daughter Juliet.
Speech Pathologist and local Chloe Justins held a special workshop to explore the subject of Little Learners – the importance of building emergent literacy in children 5 years and under.

Held at the CRC on Friday 20th April, the session follows a very successful ‘Tea and Toddler’ workshop held by Chloe late last year. Previous participants found the information incredibly worthwhile and requested a follow up session.

Topics which were covered during the interactive three hour session included building blocks for literacy, the benefits of book shares, how to turn book shares into a conversation, how to introduce new words and how to help children use language to think and learn.  Chloe also shared 'Tips and Tricks' on how to develop language and literacy skills. PLUS! All participants went home with a free book to help  them implement everything discussed.

Extremely positive feedback including, how wonderful it is to have this level of expertise available in Dumbleyung.  Thank you to Chloe for sharing her wealth of knowledge and expanding the learning experience for parents, teachers and families in the district.

If you have an area of interest you would like covered in the future please contact the CRC on 9863 4829 or via email admin@dumbleyungcrc.com.

'Mini Picasso' masterpieces for ANZAC Day

Pictured above: Our 'mini Picasso's' with the amazing wreath made for the ANZAC service.
On Wednesday April 18th the Dumbleyung Community Resource Centre (CRC) facilitated a ‘Children’s ANZAC Craft’ in remembrance of the upcoming ANZAC Day on April 25th.

Five children attended the CRC school holiday activity and together created 11 amazing poppies which are on display in the front windows of the CRC. The masterpieces were created with paper plates and a variety of red coloured materials – overall a fun morning for all!

The second activity was to create a group wreath made from tracing children’s hands and joining them together as the shape of the wreath. Once the wreath was made children started to cut out little flowers to decorate the wreath. The unique and special wreath made by a few ‘mini Picassos’ of Dumbleyung will be presented at the ANZAC service later today.

Thank-you to everyone who attended the CRC school holiday activity, it made for a fun morning! Watch this space for more exciting events or if you’re stuck for other school holiday activities then why not attend a Dumbleyung movie Night on Friday April 27. Showing ‘Despicable Me 3’ – a movie for all ages! Contact the CRC on 9863 4829 for more information!

ANZAC Service Details - Those who wish to participate in the ANZAC march are to meet outside the CRC at 11.15am. The service will follow at 11.30am at the ANZAC memorial on Absolon Street. All are welcome to enjoy a light lunch at the Dumbleyung District Club following the service.
