LAST CHANCE - RESPONSES DUE TODAY (MAY 31)! Would you like your children to attend a middle school in Katanning run by an established well reputed private school? If so please take the time to take this survey as it could be very important for the future education of our children. Investigations are taking place to bring an established a non-government fee-paying middle school (Year 7-9) in Katanning. They need to determine if this is viable so your response is important.
Shire of Katanning invite you to complete a survey investigating the future demand for expansion of Middle School (Yr 7-9) educational choices in Katanning and surrounding regions.Complete Survey Now: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FD8YVZP
Community Survey Update
It had been promised that following the closure of the community survey that the results would be put out in the newsletter. While this is still what is going to happen, the community survey is going to be re-opened in July in order to get as many people participating in the survey as possible. We will be pushing hard to hear from everyone so please, when the survey opens, please fill it out straight away rather than having us chase you down the street to fill out a copy.

WANDRRA Update
The road inspection has been completed and sent to Main Roads. Main Roads are currently checking the inspection report and will let us know if any damage is obviously not eligible.

Once we have got the tick off from Main Roads, a tender will be put out for the necessary repairs. This is not a quick process but being a local government we must tender for any purchases over $150,000.

To speed up the process for some of the more urgent damage, we have split off some work from the tender and are putting these out as separate work packages that are small enough to only need quotes. One contractor has already been appointed and we are currently undergoing the process to appoint another. It is expected that some of these works will commence in mid-June.

If you have been listening to the news you may have heard that we are now eligible to use our day labour. While this is an improvement to the WANDRRA system, and will be very helpful in the future, we really needed the decision made the day after the floods, like it was in Queensland, rather than three months later. To be able to use our labour, we would now need to redo all the estimated costs based on the shires rates and submit this to Main Roads, which would further delay the process.

All are welcome and encouraged to come along and support the team.

D Grade
7.3-45 vs. 6.7-43
D grade narrowly lost to Brookton/Pingelly. With a margin of 21 points at three quarter time the team did well to fight back in the last quarter, though unfortunately it wasn’t enough to beat Brookton/Pingelly at their home. Best players went to A.Shotter, S.Shotter, F.Spark, S.Doney and A.Davidson.

B Grade
6.5-41 vs. 15.7-97
B Grade held the lead throughout the game to win by 56 points. Goal kickers were J.Ward(7), D.Leo (3), K.West (2), M.Ball, R.Hall and S.Jefferis. Best players went to B.McDougall, C.Davidson, J.Ward, A.Gray and R.Hall

Dumbleyung Men’s Hockey Club

Last night, Dumbleyung travelled to the Narrogin turf to play Williams in the late timeslot of 8.20pm. With a 0-0 score line at half time, Sam West scored at the 17 minute mark to put Dyg up 1-0. With 30 seconds to go, from a sideline free, Courtney Bairstow found himself at the top of the D, and with a tomahawk shot, scored with 2 seconds left on the clock! Final score 2-0.  A happy group! No game this coming weekend due to Men's Country Week.

Lakeview Golf Club

The stableford round last Saturday saw fantastic sponsorship by Afgri Wagin. It was greatly appreciated that Matt Frame represented the business, speaking very well at presentations, as well as attending and playing on the day (apparently faring far better than his partner’s brother).

Ladies winner was a jubilant Ronnie Ball with 38 points and runner up was the captain’s mother, Liz Dare. Cheryl Snell retuned from her travels to secure the Gross.

After a stressful last hole, one lady was too exhausted to sign her card and was DQ'd much to the great amusement of the men; most predominantly the captain who seemed to announce this turn of events with much vigour!

Jamie Dare was the men's winner, with a reasonable 39 points and runner up Howie Ward, with 38.

Club champion Stephen Roberts had two windies in a row (apparently before making it to the ladies tee!) but still managed to secure the gross with 17 points.

There were numerous novelties, thanks once again to the fantastic sponsorship, and these were collected by: Dave Wall Numbers 1 & 17, Matt Frame Number 5, Jamie Dare Number 9 and Howie Ward Number 18. An extra special novelty prize was awarded to the aghast Minjee Lee wannabe.

Birdie hole was won by Jamie Dare, and it was duly noted that this was a great improvement from last week’s misses.

Next week is an ever popular par round, sponsored by Kukerin Rural Supplies.

Welcome back to our lovely local resident and secretary, Canadian Margie Ward. You have been greatly missed and we are all pleased you are here to put us back on track.

Don't forget to keep June 10th free as all hands will be needed on deck for the Great Southern 4BBB. A meeting will be held on Thursday 1st June, 7.30pm at the Dumbleyung District Club to discuss and finalise this further. The ladies will meet on Tuesday  6th June to clean the club house and on Friday 9th June to assist with food preparation. Keep an eye out for emails and texts regarding food requirements, help on the day, busy bees and more details.

Game of the Giants for our Ducks

This week saw our Ducks playing against the 2016 Premiership Runners-up Allstars 1. It was a hard fought game for a variety of reasons but one particular standout was very obvious – height!  Allstars 1 have many tall players, which is perfect for the game of netball!

But good things come in small packages and our Ducks produced some great passages of play throughout the game. Carly Smith dominated the centre court with many intercepts throughout the game, with Lou Dare, Ally Peters and Kirra Roberts working solidly in defence.  Hanna Chiswell, Chloe McDougal and Katrina Gray were tested within the land of giants and incredibly, were able to weave their magic to score a good tally of goals.

The final score: Allstars 1 (69) to Dumbleyung (27).  Best players for Dumbleyung included Lou Dare, Chloe McDougall, Ally Peters and Kirra Roberts.

This weekend sees a fixtured bye for the Katanning Netball Association with the “Smarter than Smoking” Association (Netball) Championships being held at Wembley Sports Park. Good luck to the Katanning Netball Association teams who are participating in this competition.

Round six commences Saturday 10thJune with Dumbleyung to play Kojonup 2 on Court 2 at 3.00pm.

On a special note, big congratulations to two of our netball stars, Dumbleyung Netball Club President, Roisin Ball and our Secretary, Amanda Gilfellon, who will be welcoming babies late spring! Article by P.Gooding

A New Opportunity to Fund Tree Planting on Farms
Greening Australia and the Blackwood Basin Group would like to inform landholders in the general area of the Upper Blackwood Basin area about soon to be announced funding under the Australian Governments
20 Million Trees Program
Greening Australia is one of three service providers delivering outcomes into this national tree planting program and since the program began in 2015 we have worked in partnership to implement over 1,400ha of revegetation using a combination of direct seeding and tube stock.
We are keen to discuss with local Upper Blackwood Basin farmers how this funding opportunity can be utilised to deliver multiple on-farm benefits.
  • Biodiverse plantings to stabilise waterways, buffer remnant vegetation and create new habitat areas for specific local animals.
We are particularly interested in finding revegetation sites that can benefit the local iconic Red-tailed Phascogale.
And we can also discuss other styles of revegetation for your farms including:
  • Native based fodder systems to revitalise degraded low productive land and improve productivity
    • Contribute to autumn feed gap requirements
    • Reduce effects of wind erosion on susceptible soils
    • Create profitable grazing on areas under threat of salinity
    • Shade, shelter and fodder for ewes with lamb or off-shears
  • Biodiverse sandalwood plantings
For more details or to discuss your revegetation needs please contact your local
Blackwood Basin Landcare Officer
or Anne Smith from Greening Australia on 0427 088 397

Please note that implementation of all proposed project areas will be dependent on Greening Australia being successful in our 20 Million Trees tender process.

Pictured above: Ladies and gents enjoying the day and sumptuous food at the Patchies Cancer Cuppa Day
Over 35 people attended the 14th Dumbleyung Patchies Cancer Cuppa Day on Tuesday May 30th at the Dumbleyung District Club. Attendees enjoyed a delicious spread of sweet and savoury treats whilst local Louisa Dare (having raced in from the paddock) shared her experience with breast cancer. Louisa’s experience led to many sensitive and relevant questions being addressed – a great outcome for a topic sometimes not spoken about.

Margie Ward also spoke before the raffle winners were announced. Well done to local Kaylene Moran who won the quilt raffle which had been on display in the Dumbleyung Co-op and to Jeanie Hudson and Eloise Bartram who both won chocolate raffles.

In addition to all the delicious treats, a number of quilts were on display and available for purchase by local quilter Vicki (mother of Nick Green) plus a variety of jams and pickles.

The event raised a staggering $900 for the Cancer Council with a huge thanks to everyone who attended, the Dumbleyung District Club for the use of their premises and Cheryl, June and Vicki for donating their time to making the raffled quilt.

Igniting passion for the past

The recent Genealogy 101 workshop held on Monday 29th May and facilitated by the CRC, ignited some passion for history closer to home.  Participants were keen to learn more about the basics of genealogy, how to research their individual family trees and were enriched by the knowledge of numerous free resources and links.

Course content was based on information accessed through the University of Third Age.  Two of the eight units were covered in this workshop though many other items, ideas and shared knowledge was also explored.

One of the highlights was the “Toes have it” item (see picture below) which highlights how one’s toe configuration connects with differing genealogical lineages.  This can be further explored through Googling “genealogy and toes”.

Each participant went home with not only informative handouts but also a clear goal of what they would like to research further and achieve before catching up again on June 26th for the next instalment of information.  One gleeful participant proudly announced the following day that she had already met her goal of finding out her Great Grandfathers heritage details – within 24 hours!

One of the take home messages was to begin with the present and work backwards, utilising information sourced from living relatives.  Starting the conversation and recording details and stories discussed is a wonderful way of capturing this history.

The CRC is excited to let the community know that the very popular ancestry.com site is available to access free through the library.  It does require library membership which of course is also free!  Please speak to Ally or Davina if this interests you and there is no need to have attended the workshop to gain access to ancestary.com.

Due to such positive feedback there have been requests for another Genealogy 101 workshop to be held in the near future.  This may be held in the evening with enough interest, especially for those who were interested but unable to attend the original time and date.

The sequential workshop of Genealogy 101 is scheduled for Monday June 26th.  Review/information of the Genealogy 101 workshop is needed to attend this workshop and is available on request.
If you would like to register or attend either of these sessions please email admin@dumbleyugncrc.com or call 9863 4859.

Good luck to all those who are having fun discovering their past – from Convict to Sir; Seamstress to Queen Victoria to Winemaker; Farmer to Baker.

National Reconciliation Week 2017

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs annually from 27 May – 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively. In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision.

The theme for #NRW2017 is ‘Let’s Take the Next Steps.’

Amongst the list of events there is the Kulin Flag Pole Dedication on Friday June 2nd.  This will be held form 10.30am – 11.30am at 38 Johnston Street, Kulin.  It will consist of adding a third flag pole at the Shire of Kulin administration building for the Indigenous flag as part of Reconciliation Week. The event will include Welcome to Country and presentation by Grant Riley, an Art Exhibition by Grant and Anne Riley of Wuddi Cultural Centre, and morning tea.
