Roadside spraying in our region

30/6/2016

Picture
Roadsides in the following shires will be sprayed for bridal creeper over the next 2 months as a result of State Government funding received from the State Natural Resource Management Office in South Perth and coordinated by Andrea Salmond from the Katanning Landcare Office.

Shires included for the roadside spraying are; Narrogin, Wagin, Woodanilling, Katanning, Dumbleyung, Kojonup, Kent and West Arthur.

The funding has been redistributed to try to give the shires with the worst infestations or largest land-area the greatest amount of funds to cover greater distances.

Coordination for the Shires f Kojonup, Katanning, Dumbleyung, and Kent Shires will be coordinated by Andrea Salmond from the Katanning Landcare Office.
  • Any additional sightings/reports should be forwarded to Andrea.
  • If time and budget allow, the Contractor will get to those sites as well.
  • We will be doing everything we can to maximise the number of km of road covered, with the fewest “back and forth” or “empty km” we can
  • Please note the Contractor always sprays the complete roadside verge to the fence when appropriate.
  •  100% kill is NOT guaranteed. That’s the devilish nature of Bridal Creeper

Please contact Andrea Salmond for any further information or to report sightings;

Bridal Creeper Blitz in Dumbleyung and Kukerin

Photo Left- Dumbleyung volunteers minus Derryn, Beth, Kate, Kristy and Carmen.  Photo Above - Kukerin volunteers assisting to spray Bridal Creeper
Over 96.5 volunteer hours were given across Dumbleyung and Kukerin on June 22 and 24 as community members assisted in the spraying of bridal creeper. Over 25 people attended ready to rid our towns of this menacing weed and in no time at all, all sites were sprayed and the job was done.

With this amount of enthusiasm and continued effort by local volunteers, an annual spray program before the weed flowers, will be sufficient to keep both town sites and bush areas from being overrun with bridal creeper. A small amount of chemical, some equipment supplied by the Shire, along with a few volunteers for the next few years will save our Shire from the Bridal Creeper curse.

Acknowledgements to Bob Bray, who initiated the idea and Catherine Watkins who was very keen to support and helped to rally farmers in Kukerin. A small celebration to thank volunteers has been held at the Dumbleyung District Club and Kukerin Hotel.

If you are aware of infested areas along the roadside please report it to Claudia Hadlow at the Landcare Office. If reported It may be sprayed by Dean Morgan who has been contracted to complete such work. Contact dyglandcare@westnet.com.au  phone 0429612447 or 98634 225.

Our Dumbleyung Ducks played a very young Allstars 2 team last Saturday at the Katanning Leisure Centre.  Neither side had won a game this season, so we were in for a great game!
With seven players including hockey star extraordinaire Mel Eynon, we battled it out in what was a tightly contested first quarter.  Both teams were playing goal for goal until the last few minutes where Allstars 2 managed to take advantage of a few turnovers.  The second quarter we managed a few turnovers ourselves, going into the third quarter only three goals down.

However, our momentum was short lived as we suffered the third quarter blues!  Unforced errors and some costly passes saw Allstars 2 make the most of our mistakes, with our defence working extra hard to get the ball back up to our goal end.  The forth quarter we were determined to regain control and ended that quarter two goals up – unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win the game.
The final score was 45 – 33 in favour of Allstars 2.  On a positive note this is our highest score for the season!  Our next game is this Saturday 2nd July against Kojonup 1 at 4pm on Court 1, our final game for this round before we break for the school holidays.
On a final note, a huge congratulations to Katrina and Adam Gray and Janelle and Regan Bairstow who have babies on the way! We will miss our Captain Trines on the court who will be joining Coach Janelle on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.  We wish Trines and Janelle all the best over the next few months.

A great crowd vied for the Bunge sponsorship with representative Stephen Roberts presenting the trophies. Ladies winner was once again Davina Gossage, scooping the trophies and runner-up Cheryl Snell playing an awesome game - keeping the head down helps with those great hits.  Gross was won by Tamara Bartram.

Men's winner was Malcom Roberts, coming off a great win with his team at the Holden Scramble in Narrogin (heard on the grapevine that Lee Smith won the day for them with a gigantic chip in on the last hole clinching a 1/2 point win) with runner-up the ever reliable Captain Marc Ball.

Great to see Eamonn Lanagan returning to the club after also playing in the Holden Scramble with captain Marc Ball.  This Saturday will be the Dumbleyung General Store sponsor day with a 4BBB.  Don’t forget that the men's open day is on the following Sunday 10 July, after the stroke round on the 9 July

A beautiful wedding in Kukerin

30/6/2016

Picture
On Saturday 18th June, Suzanne Nenke married Rex Reynolds in the local Kukerin Catholic Church.

The venue was dressed beautifully as flowers canopied over the door way and the pews decorated with rich burgundy bows, white roses and lavender. A magnificent banner in gold, burgundy and hessian created by godmother of the bride, Belinda ONeill, told the story of the day, ‘the two shall become one’, whilst the smell of fresh picked lavender lingered in the air.

Three priests, Father Andre from Toodyay, Father Charles from Perth and local priest, Father Joe concelebrated the Mass, accompanied by beautiful music by WAPA graduate, Jo Ryan,  filling the church with prayer and song.

In the evening the couple celebrated their wedding dinner at the home farm at Cambinata Yabbies function centre. For weeks the bride’s brothers, Paul, Derek & Ian, together with staff had been working to refurbish the walls of the shed, install a pot belly stove and build new gardens. The father of the bride, Michael, built a beautiful lectern from jam posts and a team of volunteers led by the bride’s sister in law, Lisa, iced the towering five tier wedding cake (made by the bride’s mother, Mary).

A magnificent meal was prepared by Rhys Jones, head chef at Frasers Restaurant and two supporting chefs.  The air was alive with live music and the bride and groom thrilled the guests with a specially choreographed bridal dance.

The bride and groom had travelled back from Sydney where they are both currently working and guests travelled from London, Malaysia, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Kununurra and various other parts of the state. The following morning, the chefs were up early to prepare breakfast for guests who had camped on the property or stayed at Mary’s Farm Cottages, Kukerin Hotel and other accommodation in the area.

Dumbleyung versus Cardinals Fever - 18 June 2016
First and foremost, huge congratulations to Katrina Gray for gaining her National C Umpiring badge.  Trines and three other ladies from the Katanning Netball Association were awarded this honour last Saturday. Trine’s has umpired extensively over many seasons for our Club of which we are all very proud that she has achieved this milestone.  Congratulations Trines!

This week saw Carly Smith and Petronella Andersson back on court as well as a much more competitive game for our team against Katanning side Cardinals Fever.  We started off really well and in front at the end of the first quarter by two goals.  The second quarter was more of a challenge with Cardinals stepping up their attack and scoring accurately and seeing us one goal behind Cardinals at half time.  The third and fourth quarter we began to tire and make some costly mistakes that saw Cardinals take advantage and score those much-wanted goals.

The final score was Cardinals Fever 33 – 22.  We walked off the court feeling very proud, as it was our highest score and lowest margin for the season!  We’re improving!  We have two more games before the end of the first round is completed before we split into our proper division.  This week’s game is against Allstars 2 at 4pm on Court 1.

Kukerin Lake Grace Hockey Club

Hockey this week was played in Kukerin against Narembeen.

C-Grade won 2-0 with goals from Claire and Jack and award to Ashleigh. B-Grade won by forfeit which will be great to have the points on the board for them. A-Grade had a great 3-0 win. Goals by Michelle Crew-Reid, Mel and Ellie. Awards to Kaitlin and Stevie.

There is a bye this week due to country week. We wish everyone the best of luck!

Further, a big congratulations to Brooke Crew-Reid on making the WA State Country Women's Team and Anna Taylor and Trish Leo in their respective WA Masters Teams.

A small but determined crowd played for the Kukerin Rural Services (Kim and Michelle Gooding) trophies.  It was great to see Evan Williams and Scott Jefferis out on the course.  Due to other commitments Kim & Michelle (playing hockey) couldn't attend but their sponsorship is very much appreciated.

Winners for the men was Graeme Jose with all square on a count back from Evan Williams with the Gross being won by our captain Marc Ball.  Ladies winner with plus 2 was T Bartram and runner up was Liz Dare.  Novelties were won by Marc, Bob, Paul, and Graeme.  Next week is a Stableford with the sponsors being Bunge.   Congratulations to Marc Ball and Adam Gray for winning the Nett at Harrismith 4BBB and Graeme Jose and Tim Dowdell winning the Nett.

Dumbleyung Old Ducks maybe not so old!

25/6/2016

For the first time in four years the Dumbleyung Netball Club entered a team into the Katanning Netball Associations Over 30’s Carnival.  This year saw nineteen teams compete across three grades, with teams travelling from as far as Perth players from Southern Cross and Hopetoun and the oldest player age 65 to participate in this great annual competition.  A team of 30 umpires from the Great Southern Netball Region Academy kept the day functioning efficiently.

The day is played as a short netball format consisting of two 12-minute halves with each team playing one another for points with the top two placed teams going straight through to the Grand Final.  We were placed into C-grade, which consisted of 6 very competitive teams.

Our team the “Dumbleyung Old Ducks” included Elspeth Smith, Carly Smith, Roisin Ball, Jen McCarthy, Amanda Gilfellon, Mel Eynon, Pip Gooding and last minute recruit Amy Bolt and coached by Janelle Bairstow.

Kojonup Puffin Panthers were the first team we played against.  They were beautifully dressed in black and finished their outfit with bright pink tutus.  Although they gave us a run for our money we managed to take advantage of a few over turns and score those magical goals, enabling us to win the game.  That winning feeling was sensational and boosted our confidence going into our second game against the Wagin Queens.

At the end of the first half against the Wagin Queens we were even.  It was a lower scoring game and tightly contested with Wagin coming away in the dying minutes to finish four goals up.  With a large break between our second and third game it was time for the Old Ducks to regroup and head out for coffee to The Daily Grind.

Our next three games against the Cranbrook Cranny Granny’s, Katanning Tutu Much and Katanning Cardi Cougars were all victorious for us of which we could all see that our game was improving throughout the day.  Our unforced errors were decreasing, our determination was intensifying and our basic netball skills sharpening, we were looking good!

With mixed feelings as to where we would be placed at the end of the day, we were one of three teams to finish with four wins and one loss – so it came down to percentage.  The Old Ducks made it into the Grand Final by 4% over the Katanning Cardi Courgars!  We were thrilled and were determined to give the Grand Final our best shot, even though we were playing against the Wagin Queens who we had lost to earlier.

Having won the first centre pass we worked this to our advantage and scored the first goal.  This lifted our momentum and with a few unforced errors against the Wagin Queens, we made sure we converted this to goals.  By the end of the first half we were up by six goals, although this did not mean we had won the game.  Still feeling confident, we began strong in the second half.  Our leads, passes and focus down the court improved as the game progressed with defence keeping Wagin’s goals to a minimum.  The final siren couldn’t come soon enough with the final score in Dumbleyung’s favour 22 – Wagin Queen’s 11.  The victorious feeling was fantastic and we couldn’t wait to celebrate!  The day was completed with presentations and afternoon tea in the Pioneer Room at the Katanning Leisure Centre.  A big thank-you to Amanda Gilfellon for organising our team, Janelle Bairstow for coaching and to the Katanning Netball Association Executive for hosting such a well-run and fun day.

Game Scores:
Dumbleyung Ducks (18) vs Kojonup Puffin Panthers (16)
Dumbleyung Ducks (9) vs Wagin Queens (13)
Dumbleyung Ducks (18) vs Cranbrook Cranny Granny’s (9)
Dumbleyung Ducks (19) vs Katanning Tutu Much (12)
Dumbleyung Ducks (22) vs Katanning Cardi Cougars (15)

Grand Final:
Dumbleyung Ducks (22) vs Wagin Queens (11)

The Upper Great Southern Women’s Golf Association Foursomes Championship was held on June 16. A great day was had and thanks to Rambling Rose of Narrogin for their sponsorship.

The day commenced with the raising of the flag by the President, Mrs Jennine Lavender. We didn't have a flag pole so had the flag hooked up. A whole group photo was taken.

First hit off time was 9.00am from No 1, with an interval of 6 minutes between each group, with the last hitting off at 9.36am. We had 28 players - 14 pairs with 9 clubs participating.

We played 18 holes with some drizzle of rain along the way and then stopped for lunch: a chicken, lentil or gluten free burger with salad served by our wonderful men.

The sponsorship given by Paige Mahoney of Rambling Rose of Narrogin was appreciated by all with everyone vying for the wonderful 4 crystal trophies Great to see 4 different clubs winning the events.

It was a great effort by all Dumbleyung men and women to have the course looking magnificent. The Clubhouse was decked out beautifully and the food was scrumptious.

Gross Winners Cassandra Squires and Robyn Lubcke (Darkan)
Gross Runners-up Karan Murray and Wendy Dawson (Katanning)
Nett Winners Danielle Draper and Robyn Narducci (Pingelly)
Nett Runners-up Roslyn Wyllie and Jenny Hemley (Wickepin)
