To all those wonderful Volunteers that turned up to spray bridal creeper in the bush areas around the Town sites of Dumbleyung and Kukerin last year, please congratulate yourselves on achieving excellent outcomes in reducing the mass of bridal creeper growth to a manageable size. Originally we were informed that eradicating bridal creeper would extend over several years; however your efforts were so good in achieving the end result and then confirmation from good authority that plants were knocked over in the first year it will make eradication of the weed a lot easier from now on. A mop up spray and annual inspections over the next few years will determine bridal creeper is kept in check and can eventually be a weed of no significance! A great big shout out and thank you is extended to Bob Bray for sourcing and coordinating the Volunteers and being very active towards achieving great results last year. Due to Bob’s passion to target this weed until it grows no more has seen him again mopping up areas by hand spraying all sites old and new along the outer roads of the Town and in bush areas previously sprayed within the Town. Dumbleyung Men's Hockey Club The Dumbleyung men played a home game on Saturday June 24 in cold blustery weather, what a game it was! Dumbleyung held most of the attack and this paid off as Courtney Bairstow ran down with the ball and pocketed the first goal. Dumbleyung's second goal was completed when Courtney Bairstow passed the ball to Mark Smith who had a shot at goals. Williams' goalie came out of the goals and stopped the ball with a deflection that Smith followed up. He had another shot at goals and the goalie made contact with the ball but it rolled past and Courtney Bairstow and Ethan Marshall went towards goal with the ball and a final tap by Bairstow ensured the ball rolled over the line. Williams rebutted and the scores were even proving this to be a tough game to win. Mark Smith did a beautiful tomahawk from just inside the top of the 'D'to gain the lead for Dumbleyung. With another hit in by Smith, the ball got past but hit the post and deflected off. Jamie Gray was positioned well and was able to get to and push the ball into goals. The cracks were showing and wearing Williams down but they kept going and got another goal to make the score 4-3. A final goal was achieved by Dumbleyung with attacks moving the ball into the 'D' where Jamie Gray committed to a specky dive and made contact with the ball which in turn got past the goalie. The end of the game came and Dumbleyung went away with a smashing win. Well done to all players. Great defence and attack by everyone and some great saves by Owen Wigg in the newly purchased goalie gear. Better players were Courtney Bairstow, Scott Angwin and Mark Smith. This weeks game is in Pingelly at 3pm. Good luck Dumbleyung. Article by Y.Bairstow Dumbleyung Netball Club Ducks red hot over Fever Our Ducks ran red hot over Katanning team, Cardinals Fever last Saturday, securing a good win and boosting confidence. Although we did not win the first centre pass, our Ducks took to the court like our emblem takes to water! Strong passes, taking advantage of unforced errors and accurate goal shooting saw Dumbleyung nine goals ahead of Fever at the end of the first quarter. With a couple of position changes in the second quarter, Dumbleyung continued to extend their lead over Fever by another eights goals. Feeling very confident going into the third quarter, the ugly third quarter blues arose with Fever showcasing their talent through their strong defence and turning Dumbleyung’s errors into goals. Fever scored eleven goals to Dumbleyung’s seven in the third quarter. Although the third quarter set Dumbleyung back, our Ducks still held a healthy lead and again experimented with a few position changes. Wing Attack Hanna Chiswell donned the Centre bib while Centre Carly Smith went into Wing Attack. For the rest of the team Lou Dare played in Goal Keeper, Ally Peters in Goal Defence, Chloe Bairstow in Goal Attack, Katrina Gray in Goal Shooter and Janelle Bairstow in Wing Defence. The change paid dividends with Dumbleyung winning the final quarter, twelve goals to Fever’s eight. The final score: Dumbleyung (48) to Cardinals Fever (31). Best players for Dumbleyung included Ally Peters, Carly Smith, Hanna Chiswell and Louisa Dare. A brilliant win by our Ducks! Thank you to our supporters for coming along to watch our game and cheer us on! And thank you to the community for supporting the Netball Club canteen at our home footy game last Sunday. After a dumping of rain in February, the district has since found precipitation a scarce commodity with many crops waiting for rain which, by the time you read this, hopefully has fallen. On the back of 2016’s frosts, I daresay there are more than a few pastoralists out there who are a little concerned about how 2017 will pan out.
Why are the local police commenting on this? Unfortunately, hard times on the farm can lead to friction within families and in extreme cases, depression leading to self-harm, two areas where we do get involved. Signs someone is struggling include excessive drinking, becoming withdrawn or angry outbursts over small things. Look for these things in your neighbours and friends but importantly, look for them in yourself. I ask everyone to maintain our already strong community and keep check on their neighbours who may be struggling. It may be as simple as a quick chat at the fence line or a chinwag at the bar of the pub. Don’t be afraid to ask how they are going as even a small feeling that someone is interested in how you are travelling can make a huge difference. Your Dumbleyung police are more than happy to come out and have a chat and offer support options. If you are concerned about someone else, we can be confidentially contacted. There are several services available which include;
We wish you every success and good fortune this season. Article supplied by Sergeant A.Van Den Berg After hearing a lot of feedback from community members, there seems to be a huge want to upgrade and improve the Dumbleyung Playground to better cater for children of all ages.
On behalf of the community, we are hoping this upgrade will bridge the gap by making playtime more enjoyable for all ages, parents, grandparents and alike. Championing the idea, local Hanna Chiswell aims to purchase some smaller play equipment suitable for toddlers, extra seating and potentially improve some of the current play equipment. So if you feel you would like to support this idea, your donations will be a GREAT help to get this idea off the ground. Donations CLOSE 31 JULY 2017 and will be held in a trust fund at the Shire of Dumbleyung. You can donate online via gofundme page https://www.gofundme.com/dumbleyungplaygroundupgrade or in person at the Shire Office. The more money we raise the happier the 'kid's' will be ;) Thank you in advance! On Saturday 17th June, a group of people came down from Perth to assist the local community, in creating a path from the current cemetery location to the original graves at the back of the allotment. This group is known as the “Fraternity of the Travelling Trousers” and is a loose knit, non-profit organisation, assortment of Perth residents who undertake community projects. The Dumbleyung Shire provided the gravel and machinery and the pavers were provided by Kukerin Townscape, which now line the gravel path. 155 metres of gravel was laid, levelled and compacted, and pavers were laid at the edge of the path running northwest from the current graves location to some of the original graves. The team completed the task on the day and the finished product will allow easier access to the historical graves. We then retired to the Kukerin Hotel where we refreshed ourselves and Bob provided us with much appreciated nourishment. If anyone can shed any light as to why the cemetery was split in this fashion or to the history of the souls interred in these out of the way graves it would be appreciated, please call Catherine Watkin on 9864 6046.
