Tarin Rock selected for BioBlitz

26/7/2016

Picture
Tarin Rock has been selected as a BioBlitz location, a site which falls within the Southwest Australia Ecoregion biodiversity hotspot. A BioBlitz is a fun and informative way of engaging local communities and landholders whilst raising awareness of the links between agricultural systems and the natural environment. Usually conducted over a 24 hour period the event also aims to discover and record as many different living things as possible.

The Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Dumbleyung Landcare will co-host the event and encourage all to come along and help conduct this biodiversity survey. Dumbleyung Landcare has been active in this area since 2000, working closely with landholders to have 150 kilometres of fencing erected; protecting 1500 hectares of remnant vegetation and planting 220,000 biodiversity seedlings and 37,000 Oil Mallee’s.

In addition to offering your time, the Wheatbelt NRM and Dumbleyung Landcare are also seeking experts in environmental science, ecology, natural history, agriculture, education and biodiversity, to be a voluntary team leader. A Team Leader will help lead small groups (up to 10 people) conduct surveys in the area and present a short summary on their findings.

The BioBlitz will be conducted over 24 hours, from noon on Saturday October 8 til noon on Sunday October 9, 2016. If you’d like to be involved in the BioBlitz or for more information, please contact Wheatbelt NRM’s Regional Landcare Facilitator Leigh Whisson on 9670 3136 or lwhisson@wheatbeltnrm.org.au

Or if you’re particular interested in being a voluntary Team Leader, click here for an information pack.

26/7/2016

Unfortunately one in eight women in Australia will develop breast cancer however having a regular mammogram through Breastscreen WA is one of the best things you can do to detect breast cancer early.

Breastscreen WA provides over 100,000 screening mammograms every year and visit almost 100 rural towns every two years. The purpose of the mobile van is to reach those women in regional areas and provide the same quality of service which is available in the metropolitan region. It is an accredited partner of Breastscreen Australia and the service is free for women over the age of 40.

Medical Director of Breastscreen WA, Dr Elizabeth Wylie, said a free screening mammogram is one of the best things that women can do to look after their health. Breast screening saves lives and only takes 20 minutes.

Breastscreen WA will visit Dumbleyung from August 30 til September 1 and all are encouraged to book an appointment. The van will be located on Bennett Street, opposite the Dumbleyung Swimming Pool. If you can’t make the Dumbleyung dates the mobile van will then move to Wagin and Darkan where you can also book an appointment.

For more information or to book an appointment call 13 20 50.

A dozen ladies attended a Ngala Webinar on Wednesday July 20 at the Dumbleyung CRC. An interactive workshop utilising videoconferencing facilities was held and the group discussed a variety of topics with Ngala facilitator Angela.

Whilst indulging on a delicious morning tea catered by along came Henry café (included with the webinar), the group explored the following behavioural challenges;
  • Understanding the normal child developmental progress,
  • Principles to assist in guiding your child’s behaviour,
  • Challenging and confronting behaviours,
  • The parent-child relationship.

It was a successful morning with the two hour session running overtime with conversation and questions flowing. With constructive and positive feedback, the CRC hope to host more Ngala webinars in the near future and split the session over a variety of topics. If there is a topic you have questions about or would like to know more about (e.g. sleeping, eating, babies, toddlers etc.) please contact Ally at the CRC now to help with future planning.

Dumbleyung Men's Hockey Club

The Dumbleyung Men’s Hockey Club put their new purchase ('the limo') to use this week and travelled to Narrogin to play Pingelly on the turf. It was a close game and Dumbleyung fought til the end with a final score of 2-1 with goals by Courtney Bairstow and Michael Atkins.

The limo won't have to go too far this weekend, Saturday July 30, as the team plays at home (Stubbs Park) against Olympics at 3pm. All are encouraged to attend and cheer on the team.

Additional congratulations to all the local junior hockey players who exhibited their skills at the Narrogin Carnival recently.

Dumbleyung Netball Club

Our Dumbleyung Ducks played against Cardinals Force(1) at 4pm last Saturday July 23 at the Katanning Leisure Centre. The first game back from the school holiday break and our first game in division two was a slow start, though we came bouncing back in the third quarter adding a few more points against our name. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough and Cardinals Force(1) won the game with a final score of 64-9.

A huge thank you to Candice Ward and Jo Doney who came back to play and a big congratulations to Candice who scored her first ever netball  career goal - awesome work for a center player!

On another note, there's something in the water at the Netball Club as we congratulate Pip and Ross Gooding who are expecting baby number two!

This weekend we play AllStars 2 at 2.30pm.

Lakeview Golf Club

A small but determined crowd decided to brave the elements on Saturday for the 2nd last round of qualifying for the Championships sponsored by Wishbone Transport - Ray & Julie Justins. Bitterly cold to commence the days play then the rain decided to fall, making golf a bigger challenge than what it already was.  It was heard on the grapevine that the only reason George Bartram didn't play was because his sticks weren't weather proof.  Some of us of course cruised around in comfort and we all believe that straws should be drawn as to who plays with Bob Hannah and his cart - as Eric said, Bob asked ME!!!! It was wonderful to have Ray Justins present his trophies on the night, enjoying catching up with everyone and staying for the BBQ tea.

Now the winner of the Men's and the Monthly Mug and the Putting Comp-27 putts, was Bob's favourite at Odds on -  Eric Gossage with a great 85gross/71nett, runner-up Graeme Jose 87g/72nett and Gross  Paul Ward 91.  Ladies winner T Bartram with a 93/71nett, runner-up Sharlene Powell 114g/ 82nett and Gross winner was Davina Gossage.  Novelties were won by Davina, Graeme x2, Paul, Tamara and Eric.  Thank you to Bob Bray for mowing our special holes for the women so we can find our balls.  It is a fact of life that, most of the time we are just not powerful enough to hit cleared, mowed or slashed areas that most of the men can reach.

Next week is Wagin Stable Gear- Rhonda Carbone's day - playing a Stableford. Remember that the last qualifying round is on Saturday 20 August. If you are going to play in the Championships, please let Marc or Tamara know as the 1st Eliminations commence 27 and 28 August.

Ride for Logan exceeds goal and raises over $100k for Heartkids WA

Picture
A chilly but sunny Wednesday morning saw the ‘Ride for Logan’ Crew leave Kukerin and make their way to Dumbleyung where they were welcomed with a delicious morning tea and small fire pit to help defrost their frozen limbs.

Knowing exactly what you need after a cold morning bike ride, the Dumbleyung Cycle Club hosted the group for what the ‘Ride for Logan’ crew said was the ‘best morning tea of all morning teas’. After a quick rest, delicious food to re-energise, and a photo with the iconic Bluebird, the group were back on the road and off to Katanning.

Farmers met and cheered on the group at the end of driveways, communities came out in full force to share even more delicious cake and many donated as the group rode their way from Katanning to Albany. The ‘Ride for Logan’ crew definitely felt the love, support and appreciation as they travelled across South West, Western Australia and they thanked everyone along the journey.
A journey which after 1000+kms saw them arrive in Albany (from Perth) on Friday July 15th. Though there was little rest for the group as they added the final touches to the Ride for Logan Quiz night which saw a 450 strong crowd fill the gymnasium of Great Southern Grammar in Albany.

A successful and fun quiz night and auction, the group have raised over $100,000 for HeartkidsWA (smashing the original goal of $50,000). Heartkkids will now host two Heartkids Camps with the first to be held later this year at Rottnest Island. The CEO of Heartkids WA said that this is the single biggest fundraising total for the organisation ever!
Huge congratulations to Macca and Maureen Adams, Daniel Leary (Logan’s mate who initiated the idea) and the whole group behind the scenes that made the event such a success.

On Saturday July 16th the rain clouds stayed away (just) for the perfect wedding of Clare and Michael Atkins.  The setting was magnificently placed on the Ward farm overlooking rolling hills of canola with the lake glowing in the background.  The reception was held at the Wishbone Watering Hole, a beautifully and artistically transformed location.

38 Christmas Cake at fun brunch and bingo

Picture
On Tuesday July 19 the CRC was full of Christmas (in July) cheer! Over 15 people attended the Christmas in July, Brunch and Bingo event hosted by the Dumbleyung CRC and along came Henry Café. No game of bingo is the same without ‘Bingo Lingo’ which there was no lack of – 32 buckle my shoe, 17 dancing queen and 66 clickety click.

In-between the number calling, cake eating and tea drinking, guests completed a Christmas Quiz which Faye answered all correctly (and without the assistance of Google!). You too can try your hand at the Christmas Quiz below.

The morning was full of laughter and discussion. Four games were played which saw Audrey, Helen, Yvonne and Karin go home with sweet treats, scratchies, jams and chutneys. It was also lovely to see the HACC group add this to their calendar of events and we thank the Hospital Auxiliary for subsidising this event for HACC clients.

The CRC and along came Henry hope to hold a Christmas Bingo Lunch or similar later this year so ‘watch this space’ for more festive community events!

Lakeview Golf Club

It was a 4 seasons in 1 day on Saturday with golfers vying for the Katanning Brake Clutch & Ag Repairs trophies; a few of the best to warm the cockles of your heart were on offer.  It was great to see Steve and Julie Hawkins for their day, though they were not affected by the weather, travelling in style in their cart along with the other cart golfers Bob and Eric. Men’s winner was Eric Gossage 37points with Bob Hannah runner-up 33, Gross Steve Hawkins.  Ladies winner Davina Gossage 31pts and T Bartram 31.  Novelties; Davina once again taking 2, Bob, Eric and Tamara 1.  Next week will be a Stroke Qualifying round sponsored by Wishbone Transport - Ray and Julie Justins. 'Pokémon Go' found in Dumbleyung

18/7/2016

Picture
It's been hard to watch, read or listen to the news this past week without hearing or reading the words 'Pokémon Go' and there's no escaping it as 'Pokémon Go' has hit Dumbleyung.

Pokémon Go is a free to play, location based augmented reality mobile game. Once the app is downloaded players use their GPS location to search and collect Pokémon characters. There are 'Pokey stops' which are similar to a Pokémon shop and 'Pokémon Gyms' where players can battle the characters they've collected - and Dumbleyung has two of each!

To the blind eye you wouldn't know when you stand at the Dumbleyung War memorial or the Farming History display on Absolon Street that these locations are also a 'Pokè Stop'. Finding these locations requires the player to walk around until it is shown on their map.  Local youth Daniel Jacobs, said he has walked over 10kms in the past three days and found almost 30 Pokémon characters.

For gamers the kilometres of walking pays off when you capture a rare Pikachu like the character spotted at the Stubbs Park entrance. Originally released in America, Australia and New Zealand the game has gone viral and was released in Europe this week.

To find out more, download the app and try the game yourself or keep an eye out for Pokémon Go players in Dumbleyung - you won't miss them as they'll be head down and following the path their phone takes them.
