One club whose season finished with a win is Dumbleyung ‘Allstars’ Darts Club. Playing in Darkan on August 26 the team won B Grade final against Wagin Redbacks, which made it the first defeat this season. A very close game of 5 all, the final game saw Allstars win 6-5. The Redbacks were gracious in their defeat, and a great crowd attended the event. Following the game the team enjoyed an end of season dinner and windup. Well done Dumbleyung Allstars!

Our Ducks played Katanning team, Allstars 2 in the Katanning Netball Association’s First Semi-Final, in what was a nail biting game from start to finish.

Winning the first centre pass, our Ducks didn’t quite get the start they were hoping for with Allstars 2 taking the charge.  Our Ducks resettled and soon found their wings beginning a run of goals that were integral to the rest of the game.

The game had it all, spectacular intercepts, fierce contested play and a few cautions from the umpires, both teams threw their hearts on the line knowing this could be their last game of the season.  Dumbleyung’s lead from the first quarter was jeopardised in the final quarter.  Allstars 2 came within a goal from the five goal lead Dumbleyung had established leaving injured team mate (and timekeeper for the game) Lou Dare in a silent panic!

Not to despair our Ducks still had enough left in their tanks to get another run of goals ending the game Dumbleyung (51) to Allstars 2 (46).  Best players included Carly Smith, Chloe McDougall and Hanna Chiswell.  Well done Ducks!  A fabulous game and a great way to start the finals campaign!

Our Ducks play hometown rivals Broomehill in the Preliminary Final this Saturday 2nd September at 1.30pm, Court 4.  So come along and support our Ducks in what will be another hotly contested game.  Broomehill will be firing after their loss to our Ducks less then 3 weeks ago.  Best of luck to our Ducks!

Pictured above: Eric Gossage with Dave Wall.
Well, it was D-Day on Saturday for some, with the ladies playing until the 20th hole to decide a winner.  Davina  Gossage was 4 down until the last few holes, then decided to up the antics came back to be all square on the 18th.  Ladies then halved 1, but the bush got the better of Davina and Liz Dare with her pink stick and good form winning the 20th.   Liz played an outstanding round and showed off her beauty, grace and style as she came in after 20 holes with her best score for many, many years. Liz nearly managed her second career hole in one with a magnificent shot on No5.  Partner Davina did not match this style especially on the 20th hole as she managed to go backwards a number of times, even landing in the adjacent GUR twice.  The waiting men were well entertained by this exhibit, even though they missed counting a few of the shots.  Fortunately Liz wasn't hit or injured in this display and managed to come out an elated winner. A magnificent game girls and good luck to you Liz in the finals.  Liz has always wanted to play in a final and has now attained her wish.  Keep up the good form Liz and you will be a winner.

The men's was won by Dave Wall 8/6 defeating Lee Smith and  with Stephen Roberts and Jamie Dare deciding not to be outdone by the ladies, continued on to the 21st hole, with Stephen winning. The two winners then had to back up on Sunday with an early start, 8.00am for Eric Gossage and Dave Wall and after conceding to be photographed started their journey, both men were in good form. Eric was 2 up going into No13, with both men hitting straight down the middle and Eric winning this hole with a birdie.  This put him 3 up, but Dave decided that enough was enough and won the next 2 holes.  Eric eventually won on No 17 - a match worthy of screening on Foxtel.   Paul Ward and Stephen Roberts decided to play at 8.30 and missed the photo, but due to the diligent photographer, were captured on No8 with Paul 2 up.   Stephen was spot on with his chipping, edging back into contention, and eventually winning 2up.

Winner of the odd bods was yes, you guessed it, Bob Hannah himself, a magnificent 43 points.  A picture to watch Bob play, straight down the middle, easy relaxed swing, putting magician you name it Bob has it, well done Bob.  And boy oh boy can Ricky Mott hit a ball, out of sight, over the hill and far away.  No wonder men get so many birdies or lose so many balls.

It was great to see the 9 hole comp continuing with Matt Gilfellon winning with an awesome 24points, his 1 day of the year golf,  and he carries his bag - very impressive!

Next week's sponsor is KPR Bookkeeping, Kevin & Sharlene Powell.  Don't forget to get yourself a partner for the Men's and Ladies day on Friday 8 September.  The final of the Championships will be Saturday 9 September commencing at 8.25am for Eric Gossage v Stephen Roberts, and at 8.30am for Tamara Bartram v Elizabeth Dare.

Fast, healthy and sustainable: What we want from our food in the future
By Kate Langford
17 July 2017

Our Meals By Design will aim to provide healthy, chilled convenience meals that cater for people with specific nutritional needs. Eating ready meals designed for your specific personal needs, snacking on insects and taking scientifically-validated supplements for stress and anxiety is not something from a futuristic movie; it could be reality just years from now.

This week we released our Food and Agribusiness Roadmap which predicts three areas of opportunity for business in the sector to grow, and this may see a change in our diets.

Food for health and wellbeing
You only have to look at the popularity of chia seeds, quinoa and goji berries to realise that consumers are demanding foods that are better for them. Add to that, the estimated 10% of Australian adults that avoid gluten in their diets.
In recent years we’ve responded to this growing market, by developing BARLEYmax, a high-fibre wholegrain and the ultra-low gluten Kebari™ barley. We’re also working on canola with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
Research by our food scientists is investigating how genetics, environment and experiences influence our taste preferences and it is hoped these new insights will be used to develop better tasting healthier food options, containing less salt, sugar and fat.
Foods personalised to individual preferences are already under development. Our Meals By Design will aim to provide healthy, chilled convenience meals that cater for people with specific nutritional needs.

Sustainable solutions
Consumers want products with better environmental credentials, including more sustainable packaging, green and ethical supply chains and alternative sources of protein.
In Australia we waste 312,000 tonnes of food annually in food manufacturing alone. Our researchers are working on a Food Loss Bank, which would classify edible food otherwise destined to be wasted, log its origin and facilitate storage until it can be diverted back into the supply chain.
Edible packaging could also become a reality to further reduce waste in the sector.
When it comes to eating protein, pulses, algae and even insects offer a more sustainable option. The global edible insect market (including flours, snacks and animal feeds) is expected to grow from US $34 million in 2015 to over $520 million by 2023.

Premium foods
Driven by Asia’s growing middle class and worldwide urbanisation, the demand for high-end food and luxury food gifts is on the rise.
A small Victorian company, Preshafood, worked with us to develop premium products, such as Granny Smith and Pink Lady juices, that are pasteurised using high pressure processing (HPP) instead of heat; killing off the nasties while maintaining fresh-like characteristics and nutritional value.
We can expect to see a greater variety of quality convenient fresh and packaged products coming onto the market. This could include ready meals that contain the recommended 2+ serves of fruit and 5+ serves of vegetables.
Australia currently exports over $40 billion worth of food and beverages each year and 88 per cent of these exports are raw ingredients. To grow our food and agribusiness sector, we need to add value to the produce we grow and develop unique products here in Australia before we send them offshore.

Food and Agribusiness Roadmap is designed to assist businesses in navigating unprecedented change, brought about by less predictable growing conditions, increasingly global value chains and customers who demand healthier, more convenient and traceable foods.

A walk down memory lane -Dumbleyung District Cemeteries and Short Stories

30/8/2017

Picture
The Dumbleyung district has a unique Cemetary agreement. It has a town without a cemetery (Dumbleyung), a town with a cemetery (Kukerin) and two cemeteries without a town (Nippering and Tarin Rock). Nippering was gazetted in 1907 and Tarin Rock with a total of 38ha was surveyed in 1917 but was never developed.

After the dealth of an infant, a cemetery was considered to be needed in the Tarin Rock are on the eastern edge of the Shire. In 1915 on the Lake grace road (now call Old Lake Grace Road) a cemetery was gazetted and was located on the corner of location 14805. I understand this cemetery was closed though on request, can be used by families to keep their loved ones together – as happened as recently as the 1990’s.

Even the little town of Moulyinning had a cemetery gazetted north of the town by Dumbleyung Road Board (Shire) in 1938. It was never used and in 2009 was converted into a nature reserve.

Short stories:
Missing man – no grave

In 1893 gold was discovered in Coolgardie. Various prospectors tried to find a direct route to the goldfields for those who left Albany port. The successful team of John Holland and the two Krakoue brothers founded ‘Holland’s Track’ from Broomehill to Coolgardie. Not so successful was prospector Mr McIntosh. A good bushman, he set out from Katanning with one horse and what we could comfortably carry. A fortnight later some sandalwood cutters came across McIntosh’s horse at a spring called Merilup Soak (present day, Kukerin Golf Course). The matter was reported and a police officer, John Maher with indigenous tracker proceeded to search for the missing man. They backtracked fifteen miles from where the horse was found. As they described it, it was desert and scrub and they found all the unfortunate man’s equipment and empty water container, but Mr McIntosh was never found.

Body lost than found
This story is relayed by Peter Dawson in the Dumbleyung and Districts Short Stories Book. Two gentlemen trapping rabbits on the Kersley farm adjoining the Dumbleyung Lake went swimming on a warm day and only one man returned. He reported the missing man to Mr Kersley, then the police. The police went to the scene to find where the two people went in, but could only finds one set of tracks coming out.

Several business men and local Constable R Pilmer searched with a motor boat with no success. This was in September 1933. Then in 1944 when the lake was dry, Mr Harry Wann, well-known local green grocer, was wondering over the dry lake bed near the Coblinine Rover enters, when he came across the skeleton of the missing man, Petros ‘Peter’ Koster. Mr Koster was of Macedonian heritage. He dies on the 13th of September 1933 and was buried on the 14th of October, 1944. The grave now has a headstone, put up by his family.

Confused Graves
An old story from y memory involves the confusion of two graves side by side at the Kukerin cemetery. The question was which name belonged to which grave. To solve the problem, so the story goes, a prominent Kukerin citizen, in the middle of the night with a hurricane kero lantern and a shovel, dug down to the coffin, rubbed the dirt off the name plate and solved the problem. All the graves at Kukerin Cemetery that were without headstones have been marked with little plaques.

There’s finals fever across the Shire with many of our local clubs moving through to semi, preliminary and grand final games!

Lake Grace Kukerin Hockey Cub who were sitting top of the ladder, went into the Preliminary final on Saturday August 26 against Kalgarin/Hyden - unfortunately losing 3-1. Well done to all involved – players, coaches, executive committee, volunteers and all supporters who assisted the club this season.

Saturday August 26 also saw the Dumbleyung Ducks take to the netball court against Allstars 2 in the Semi-final. A close game, with the team won 51-46 (see sports results for full article). The win now takes the Dumbleyung Ducks into the Preliminary final this weekend against Broomehill – Good luck Ducks!

The Dumbleyung Men’s Hockey Club had a fixtured bye last weekend, and will play in the Semi-final this weekend September 2 against Allblacks in Narrogin at 8.20pm. The date and time of this game may change, please see the Dumbleyung Men’s Hockey Facebook Page for the most up to date information. We wish the club all the best as they train hard for their Grand final journey!

Our Cougars B Grade side are also a force to be reckoned with, moving through to the Preliminary final in Kukerin this Sunday September 3 and will play Katanning Wanderers. An elimination match this weekend’s games are a do or die season decider for the Cougars, Dumbleyung Ducks and Dumbleyung Men’s Hockey Club.

We wish all cubs the best of luck and look forward to (finger crossed) reporting on three winning games in next week’s Quack Chat.

To celebrate the winter sport season the combined windup will be held on Saturday September 16 at the Kukerin Town Hall at 6pm.  A fun evening to celebrate the sporting achievements of our Shire.
