The online version of the traditional scrapbook, attend an interactive workshop and learn to create your very own online photo book! Gather those special moments and create a coffee table book for every, and all occasions! A great memento for yourself or as a gift for friends and family this Christmas (yes, we said Christmas as it’s fast approaching!!).

The CRC will walk you through a step by step workshop on Friday September 27 of how to navigate the online website snpafish.com and what you need to do to create your very own unique and special photo book. An interactive workshop participants will need to bring their own laptop and 30-80 photos. The aim by the end of the workshops is to have created a photo book and finalised all details ready for it to land in your post box in the coming weeks following the workshop.

The cost per person is $15 per person (cost of photobook additional) and a maximum of five people can participate per workshop. Should the CRC receive greater interest a second workshop may be held. Note, photobooks start from $11.95 for a small soft cover landscape book.

Tarin Rock Book update August 2019

Pictured above: A Hakea nitida
I have just returned from my August visit and am now staying a day longer in this area than during autumn and early winter. The days in the reserve have been lovely. I managed not to get caught by that heavy downpour last week. I still seem to be running frantically around looking at different plants and hoping to find the ones that I didn’t see last year. I am making slow progress with that and am still finding new records. This time, I found a tiny perannual herb that is easily overlooked (Wurmbea) and the frog Hakea (Hakea nitida). It seems to me that there are different plants flowering then last year which could be because I am here at a different time in the month and due to a different rainfall pattern than last year.

I am always amazed at the diversity of flowering plants in the reserve and the succession of plant species in one genus over the months. For instance, I have been looking at sundews lately and 2 months ago saw the red-leaved sundew Drosera bulbosa, with flat leaves and several flowers. Currently the Bridal Rainbow, a climbing species with white flowers, is in full flower (D. macrantha) and I have seen the beginning of the red-ink sundew (D. erythrorhiza), the Pimpernel sundew (D. glanduligera), the Pearly Sundew (D. picnoblasta) and a pygmy sundew with orange flowers (D. barbigera). Of these, I didn’t see the red-ink sundew last year so that will be another new record for the reserve. The sundews are carnivorous plants who capture and digest insects through the dewy glands on their leaf surface. They also get some of their nutrients from the soil. Sundews are not the only carnivorous plants here in Australia. You might have heard of the Albany Pitcher plant, and tiny bladderworts (Utricularia) which occur in wetter areas. Over the next two months I hope to see these coming into flower.

My next visit will be 5 to 10 September. If anybody wants to come along, let me know and we can meet up on site. If you have any questions, you can reach me by email at tarinrockbook@gmail.com or by phone on 0439978550.

Congratulations Craig 'Fossil' Doney!

28/8/2019

It has been a big year for local, Craig ‘Fossil’ Doney! With 606 games under his belt, 2019 has been a culmination of many years involvement with local, regional and state football.

June this year, after a home game at Stubbs Park, Dumbleyung Craig was awarded a ‘bone’ by the Cougars President, Nathan Ditchburn after playing his 600th football game against the Katanning Wanderers. Showing he still has what it takes, the season continued on a high for Craig, when we was awarded the 2019 Reserves Fairest and Best for the Upper Great Southern Football League.

Early in his career Craig played for Kulin Kondinin, with 45 league games and 12 reserve games.  Kukerin Dumbleyung Football Club (KDFC) has since been his major passion with 373 league games and 70 reserve games. Craig’s commitment to the club was recognised in 2016 when we was awarded Life Membership to the Kukerin Dumbleyung Football Club.

Craig has also put on the jumper for the Upper Great Southern Football League and Eastern Districts Football League Association where he played/represented each association in 55 games and 2 games respectively. Donning the red and white, Craig has also graced the field on behalf of the South Fremantle Bulldogs and played two WAFL games.

You’d think one person couldn’t play anymore football but the talented Craig has also gone onto represent Western Australia on 47 occasions!

An asset to the Cougars, Craig’s credits continue including being awarded the Leo Graham Medallist (best player in the UGSFL League competition) in both 2001 and 2003. Life Member medallist (best player in UGSFL Reserves competition) 2019; League Best and Fairest for KDFC in 1997, 1998 and 2003; Reserves B&F for KDFC in 2008 and 2009 and League coach for KDFC 2003, 2004 and 2005 are all also form part of his resume.

Craig was President of KDFC in 2013, 2014, 2015 and Upper Great Southern Football League President in 2017 and 2018 and currently holds the Vice President role of the Association.

Craig has played in 14 A-Grade Grand finals as well as two B-Grade Grand finals.

A Grade premierships include 1993, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2006; with a B Grade premiership in 2017. Being a part of the winning seven Landmark Carnivals with Upper Great Southern Football League is also a part of Craig’s achievements.

A stellar football career to date and a sensational player we congratulate Craig Doney on achieving 600 games this season and for recently being awarded the 2019 Reserves F&B for the Upper Great Southern Football League. Your dedication to community and football is exemplary! Here’s to kicking many more goals moving forward – go the ‘fossil’ Craig Doney!

The Shire of Dumbleyung is seeking expressions of interest for a Dumbleyung Health Hub concept. There are many health professionals this could be of interest to so feel free to tag and share with:

The concept will be a modern approach to a local health hub which will also act as a small business incubator. We would hope to attract services that can be claimed through private health funds and would hope to establish the HICAPS facility for processing on the spot claims.

• Sharing the time & flexible hours – We hope to see the Health Hub open a minimum of five days per week, this could work as a roster system while each service builds up their clientele. There is also the option for after hours and weekend opening hours.
• Private consulting spaces - Pending commitment from three professionals we will progress with installing the first sealed private consulting room within the space which will create two consulting spaces and a waiting area.
Are you a health professional and always wanted to have your own space but are short on money and time? The Dumbleyung Health Hub could be a great opportunity!

Although Shane O'Neil of Nufarm couldn't attend we thank him for his awesome sponsorship and hope to see him on Thursday August 29 at the Midweek Golf day.

Once again it was a close tussle between the two young guns in Jon Ward and Daniel McDougall with Jon winning on a count back with 39points and Daniel still very ecstatic about his runner-up placing.  Jon also won the Birdie Hole drawn by Layla Smith when on No11 his drive went into the lake, 2nd shot on the green and putted in with ease. Gross was by the travelling ‘Presidento’, Eric Gossage with 23points - all that golf playing on the Luxembourg greens did wonders for his golf!  Novelties were won by Garry Bateup, Ricky Mott, Lee Smith and Margie Ward with her 2nd shot easily on the green on number 18.

An easy winner for the ladies, coming back from up North, and on their way back meandering into Dongara for a quick game of golf with Cheryl Snell was Margie Ward with 37points. Runner-up  Tamara Bartram with 35points and not to be outdone by her husband, Davina Gossage winning the Gross - holidaying and playing golf all over the world,  seems to be all the rage at the Lakeview Golf club.

Don't forget the Ladies Open Day and Men's Midweek 18 hole Stableford 4BBB on Thursday, late entries accepted.

Please make sure you are on time on Saturday for the 1st and 2nd Eliminations.  The 1st hit-off is 8.30am.  For those in the 2nd eliminations it will be after the winners have had lunch and those out of the competition there will be a stableford competition if you wish to play another 18holes.

Thank you to all those who were able to attend the busy bee on Friday.

Reminder CATERING for this Thursday August 29th:
MEN: Can all male members please provide a large plate of savouries ready to serve.
Eg sandwiches, dip and biscuits, meat and cheese platter etc.
Nb: no food that needs heating please as there will be no ladies in the kitchen to heat and serve.
If you aren’t playing on the day please arrange for your food to be delivered on the day or beforehand.
Please note if you don’t provide food you and your playing partners will not have any afternoon savouries.
LADIES: a large plate of decadent afternoon tea to share please.

Kukerin Golf Club

Ditchburns Win Championships

Kukerin Golf Club held their Championship and plate finals. All golfers in the 36 holes matchplay finals were all rugged up and ready to go at 9am, first to tee off for the Mens championship was Ross Ditchburn vs Tim Adams, followed by the Plate final were the experienced pairing of Barry Gray vs Barney Smith, finally Jodie Ditchburn and Marnie West teed off for the Womens Championship, after Marnie won her playoff with Debbie Smith on the Wednesday. While the finals were under way a healthy group of eight golfers hit the course for a friendly stableford that got very competitive with some solid scores.

In the first final Ross Ditchburn was able to gain a lead on the first 18 holes before Tim Adams made a late charge towards the end, but it wasn't quite enough to claim the win as Ross drained a long putt on the 34th hole to give him victory and the 2019 Mens Championship - he won 3 holes up with 2 to go. As that game finished Barry Gray and Greame Smith returned to the club house, after a tight tussle most of the day Barney was able to get a run on and won the match, 5 up with 4 to go, winning the Plate for 2019.

Jodie Ditchburn and Marnie West were in for a long day, everytime we heard a report they were all square even after 27 holes but then Jodie Ditchburn was able to create a small lead and after a wonderful chip in from the bush on number 15, in front of the crowd, she claimed the 2019 Womens Championship, 4 up with 3 to go. Congratulations to all the winners and runner ups on a great day of golf.

The quality golf continued in the Stableford comp, Paul King showed some great form coming off the carnival last week hitting a massive 46 points with 80 off the stick to win the day. Eric Sebatian was next best for the men with a very good 41 points. While Debbie Smith also smashed an excellent 41 points showing up most of the blokes after a month or so of not playing.

Congratulations to Jodie Ditchburn and Marnie West for finishing runner up in the 4BBB Narrogin Ladies Carnival last weekend. Also to Ross Ditchburn who came runner up and Tim Adams equal third (closed gross) in the Lakes Mens Carnival in Lake King.

Next week golf is on Sunday as the Lake Grace Kukerin Hockey Grand Final being held in Kukerin Saturday August 31. We encourage everyone to come down and have a hit on Fathers Day, we are playing a fun Canadian Foursomes competition. We have some great sponsors in AGFRI who always bring some good prizes, so a big thank you to AFGRI for their support!

Lake Grace Kukerin Hockey Club

This week the A grade and Men's teams travelled to Hyden for the Preliminary final.

C Grade went straight through to the big dance last week. Well done to coaches Julie Ditchburn and Nigel Faulkner and good luck C graders!!

Commiserations to B grade who is out of the finals campaign. It was great to see you supporting our club on the weekend!

A grade
We knew it would be a tough game against Hyden - Kalgarin (KHATS) with the added pressure of a potential grand final at home. We came out fighting and Tahryn Trevenen was the first to score off a short corner in the first quarter. The second goal came as a result of some great field work from Kaitlin Taylor, who shot a ball off to Tahryn, resulting in a goal in the third quarter. Heading into the fourth quarter with a 2 nil lead isn't enough against a team like KHATS and we knew we had to dig deep to remain on the winning side of the scoreboard.

A grade played the rest of the game with fighting spirit and demonstrated strong team work throughout the day. Goals are the result of the whole team working together and we demonstrated that on Saturday. A field goal from Mel Eynon late in the fourth quarter sealed the deal and we went on to win 3 nil. We secured a spot in a home grand final in Kukerin against Kulin-Kondinin Vipers - Go Souths!! Thank you to KHATS for hosting the preliminary final and for a great game of hockey. Well done coach Floyd Pryor and the A grade side. Good luck this Saturday August 31 and thank you to our umpires and supporters.

Men's
After falling short in the semi-final the Men knew it was crunch time. Playing against Vipers is never easy, then add to it being a knock out final, everything was on the line – we knew what had to be done. From the first whistle we gave it hell! After a bit of back and forth and a couple of short corners we were awarded a stroke. Our master stroker in Floyd stepped up and slotted it to give us the front. From then on we kept our push and intensity high, not giving an inch! Zhane slotted a nice goal to give us a handy 2-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. A strong finish to the first half, Floyd netted his second of the day from a short corner with overhead slam after a shot on goal from Jamie was saved by the goalie. The second half saw Vipers come out hard and apply the pressure but our blokes were up to the task with a couple of good saves by ‘big’ Deano in goals. The icing on the cake was a 3rd goal from Floyd with Harry setting him up to slam one home! Final score was 4-0. Commiserations to Vipers - you fought hard all day and didn’t let up at all. Thanks to KHATS for hosting the day it was very well done and a massive thanks to all our spectators for cheering us on all game. Grand final baby, here we come!

Well done coach Michelle Gooding and then Men's side. Good luck this Saturday!!

On Saturday August 31, Lake-Grace Kukerin (Souths) will be hosting the grand final in Kukerin. The canteen will be available, along with a bar (open from 12.30pm) and afternoon tea will be served after the Men's game.

C grade, A grade and the Men's teams have made it into the big dance! If you're keen to come along and support your local teams, approximate times for the games are below. Times will depend on extra time, strokes etc.
C grade 10am (Souths vs Corrigin)
B grade 11.30am (KHATS vs Vipers)
A grade 1.00pm (Vipers vs Souths)
Men's 2.30pm (Corrigin vs Souths)

We look forward to a fantastic day of hockey on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

Ducks play last fixtured game and D1 are in the finals!

Saturday, August 24 saw the Dumbleyung Ducks take to the court for the last fixtured game of the season - and how the season has flown by! Dumbleyung 1 (D1) played Cardinals Force at 1.30pm and Dumbleyung 2 (D2) played Cardinals Phoenix at 3pm.

D1 hit the ground running with plenty of amazing goals by Louisa Dare and Katrina Gray and intercepts by Hanna Chiswell and Pip Gooding! It was a close game with goal for goal scoring, and at half time the Ducks were up by 6 points! The defence, Roisin Ball and Clare Smith were on point catching many of the rebounds which in turn resulted in some great goals for the Ducks! At the final whistle it was the D1 by 14 points, final score D1 (45) to Cardinals Force (31). Best players were Alison Gray, Roisin Ball and Katrina Gray. This win takes D1 into the semi-final this weekend and will play against Djets at 3pm.

Dumbleyung 2 (D2) had many of their team back and like D1 played a strong first quarter - only 3 points behind Cardinals Phoenix at quarter time. The defence duo Janina Blake (now refereed to on the court as ‘Ja-ninga’ for her amazing on court skills) and Jenny West were sensational picking off rebounds and intercepting passes! Though unfortunately the ducks went down to Cardinals Phoenix by 26 points. Final score, D2 (24) to Cardinals Phoenix (50). Best players went to Ashlyn O’Donnell, Candice Ward and Janina Blake.

Well done to D2 on a great season! A brand new team and many players returning to the court after years of not playing and for some, never playing before. Everyone played well each game and it was awesome to see D2 continue to grow and encourage one another each week!

The Dumbleyung ducks held there end of season windup last night, Tuesday August 28 and results from the end of season windup will be in next week’s Quack Chat.

But don’t wait til’ then and come along and see the ducks (D1) play in the semi-final this weekend Saturday August 31 at 3pm at the Katanning Leisure Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along and cheer on the team!

Former Dumbleyung Primary School student, 17 year old Charlotte Edwards, has recently been selected to play in the National Australian Country Under 21’s Women’s hockey side! One of eighteen women selected, and the only person from Western Australia, Charlotte and the team will travel to Borneo in January 2020 to represent Australia!

Charlotte’s junior hockey years began playing for Kukerin before moving to Albany in 2015 where she currently plays in the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association (L.G.S.H.A) for the Manypeaks team.
Charlotte was a member of the L.G.S.H.A Country Week A-Division side which won their grand final in Perth at the recent Country Week Championships. As a result of some very good form displayed on the field, Charlotte was then selected for the WA State Women’s Country Side with fellow Kukerin local, Kelsie Adams.  Both ladies travelled and represented WA in Shepparton, Victoria earlier this month, from August 1 -12th.

Predominantly a back line player Charlotte was given plenty of work on the WA team, and whilst in Shepparton they went on to finish the competition with a win and two draws. However, it was Charlotte’s playing ability that caught the eye of national selectors, resulting in Charlotte making her debut for the National Country Under 21 team.

We wish Charlotte all the best with the upcoming competition in Borneo and all future hockey endeavours.
