Well it's all over red rover; the golf season is officially finished for another 6 months (for most).  Good luck to teams competing in the Holden Scramble in October.

It was a beautiful day for the closing of golf sponsored by Clem Henry Shearing Contractor.  A small but elite group of players played a 3 man Ambrose with banter commencing before the 1st ball was hit.  One team having 4 members were told that 4 people always win this event against 3 men, and they didn't disappoint the crowd, even though the opponents did try every trick in the book whilst walking around the course.

Maybe they should have concentrated more on their golf and not on how everyone could be penalised, with of course the Captain having the last say of the day.  Wildflowers were photographed yet again, with players having quite a few wayward shots in the bush.  Personally the Captain is tired of bushwalking, if you’ve seen one flower seen them all! (Though they are unique).

Final winners were:  Cheryl Snell, Jamie Dare, George and Tamara Bartram with 69g, 57nett & 12 handicap, Runners-up were Karen Ward, Sharlene Powell and Lee Smith 71g, 59.5nett & 11.5 handicap comment was made in this group that "we didn't bother hitting as Lee hit it out of sight straight down the fairway".  Novelties were won by an array of members.

President Eric Gossage thanked all our Sponsors throughout the year, members for their fantastic work throughout the season and will get back to everyone after Country Week regarding a busy bee to bring in signs etc.

Congratulations to trophy winners,
Ladies Most Improved - sponsored by the Mott Family was won by Margie Ward
Ladies eclectic - Tamara Bartram, Runner-up Davina Gossage
Men’s Most Improved -sponsored by the Williams Family was won by Eamonn Lanagan
Men’s Eclectic - Paul Ward, Runner-up Lee Smith

Found in our region, the Western Mouse

27/9/2016

Picture
First described from a specimen collected at Tambellup, Western Australia, in 1930, the Western Mouse has now been collected from 11 semi-isolated conservation reserves within the southern wheatbelt and south coast, the smallest of which is about 200 hectares.
Most capture sites have long-unburnt vegetation (30-50 years) containing layers of extremely dense vegetation at 0.5-2.5 metres high. Dominant upper-storey species include Eucalyptus, Isopogon, Acacia, Casuarina and Melaleuca.  Quandong, Santalum acuminatum (within the northern part of the range) and various sedge species are also important habitat requirements. Extremely variable vegetation types range from sparse low shrublands through to mid-dense woodlands and granite associated vegetation on sandy clay loam or sandy loam, frequently with a matrix of gravel.

The Western Mouse is nocturnal, sheltering during the day in a burrow (20-30 centimetres deep) which consists of a single vertical entrance shaft, connected to a horizontal loop 2-3 metres in diameter with a nesting chamber located opposite the entrance.  Other similar sized loops sometimes extend off the main loop, although these have neither entrance holes nor nesting chambers. The entrance shaft is well concealed apparently having been dug from the inside and is commonly located in dense leaf litter.  An original shaft (dug from the outside and entering a different part of the loop) is filled in once the burrow is completed.  Nesting material consists largely of loose, fibrous plant material.

The Western Mouse is communal, ten animals having been collected from one burrow system in the wild. Individuals have been recorded to travel 600 metres overnight from a trap-site to a burrow.

The diet consists largely of fibrous plant material, flowers of Acacia, Conospermum, Pultenea and Hibbertia and seeds of Hakea, Dryandra and Quandong, and various invertebrates including beetle and moth larvae. In the northern part of its range large accumulations of Quandong nuts can be found under dense low bushes and vegetation (usually within 30-50 metres of mature Quandong trees). These are chewed to extract the kernels which are rich in proteins and oils. At a number of different sites, accumulations of over 100 chewed nuts have been found, piled up to 5cm deep, covering up to 1 square metre and exhibiting various stages of decomposition, suggesting prolonged use as a feeding site.  The chewed nuts are distinguished by the small hole and distinct marks left by the incisors.

Pregnant females are found in early to mid-spring and young are born from mid- to late spring, with juveniles (10-15 g) entering the population in early summer. A body weight of 32-37 grams is attained by May or June and animals breed in their first year.

Trapping data suggest that the population density varies between seasons and from year to year but is generally one to seven individuals per hectare. Populations seem to be restricted to distinct areas and vegetation types within conservation reserves.

Pictured above (L-R): Joy Gray with Pedro and Emily Gray with Tonto
Two locals can now add stunt double to their resume as they swapped their usual equestrian eventing, for a movie set. Joy and Emily Gray, along with horses Pedro and Tonto, will feature in the Western Action film ‘The Decadent and Depraved’ directed by Jordan Prince Wright and Axel August Karlsson.

Filming commenced in Yarloop in early August, with the third block of filming currently in progress at the Watpow Downs property in Kukerin. Over 100 cast and crew are bring the story to life, with approximately 40 in Kukerin to film the opening and major fighting scenes.

Cast and crew became nocturnal due to night time, dusk and dawn scenes being filmed. Braving an icy cold morning, Joy and Emily after immersing, themselves in the wardrobe, emerged as two Western Action men, with Pedro and Tonto once settled, making their debut on set. The remaining cast and crew fell silent and, ‘Action’ was called.

Decadent and Depraved is a Western Action that follows the journey of Murphy (played by former ‘McLeod’s Daughters’ star Ben Mortley), a convicted murderer with a bounty on his head. Murphy has surrounded himself to His Majesty’s Army to ensure the safety of his family and is transported by Captain Jack Dalton (played by ‘Country Practice’ star, Michael Muntz) to be hung for his crime. Murphy and Dalton must survive the harsh terrain of the West Australian outback whilst fending off attacks from corrupt and powerful men who want to claim the bounty.

To keep up to date with all the filming visit the film’s Facebook page ‘The Decadent and Depraved’ or pop into the Kukerin Hotel on Saturday October 1 the second last day of filming to meet some of the cast and crew.

We look forward to the movie premier in late 2017!
