- Kukerin Bowling Club

Kukerin Bowling Club

Yes it’s that time of year again to get those bowls out for the commencement of another season. Kukerin Bowling Club plan to open the season this coming Sunday the 1st of October.  Those intending to play are asked to be there at 1.30 pm.  There will be a quick tidy up of the surrounds, followed by social bowls.  An invitation is extended to anyone interested in joining us for a game.

Lakeview Golf Club

The season’s closing day on Saturday 23rd September saw a great field head to the course for a fun day out in glorious golf weather. It was brilliant to see the golf club brimming with people enjoying the bbq tea and each other’s company afterwards. A big thank you to all those who attended, and for the scrumptious food.

Sponsor Clem Henry from CK Henry  Shearing Service, played some great golf on the day, but must have been aware of the outcome as he was seen disappearing quickly, prior to presentations and the announcement of his team - consisting of Marc Ball and Club Champion Eric Gossage, winning the NAGA.

The winners of the day were new Daddy Stephen Roberts, John Williams and newcomer Alex Harms. It was noted that the club champion was fortunate the playoffs were the day they were! Runners up were Sharlene Powell, Jon Ward and Lee Smith.

Presentations continued with the President thanking all playing members and committee for their hard work during the year, and for everyone’s support. All agreed what a wonderful club it is and how great to have the 9 hole competition so well supported.

The club champions were presented with their prizes and other winners announced.
Mens Champion: Eric Gossage
Mens Runner Up: Stephen Roberts
BGrade Champion: Bob Hannah
BGrade Runner Up: Graham Ball
Ladies Champion: Tamara Bartram
Ladies Runner Up: Liz Dare
Mens Eclectic Winner: Paul Ward
Mens Eclectic Runner Up: Jamie Dare  and   Most Improved: Eric Gossage
Ladies Eclectic Winner and Most Improved: Tamara Bartram (who has had a fantastic golf season with a top handicap to prove it).
Ladies Runner up: Davina Gossage

It was fantastic to hear the excited buzz of children and a huge thanks to Robyn Ogilvie for entertaining the youngsters. Clem created more excitement when he took them all for a buzz in the cart at days end.

Best wishes to all as they head to their respective sports. May you touch a golf stick over the next few months (if only to clean them) and the club looks forward to seeing you, and many new players, next year!

Mosquito Management
The shire has started fogging our townsites, to ensure that mosquitoes are controlled efforts are required from both the shire and residents. The fogging program is only partially effective, responsibility must still be taken by residents to ensure that they do everything possible to stop their homes becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in still water. The following are examples of potential breeding sites and control strategies that you can use around the home:
  • seal any holes in septic tank / treatment plant to stop mosquito access.
  • dispose of all tins, tyres and other rubbish containers that may hold water
  • put sand around bases of pot plants to absorb excess water in the dish
  • keep swimming pools chlorinated, salted or empty them completely when not in use for considerable period remove weeds and grass from drains to enable them to drain freely
  • Keep roof guttering in good repair and regularly remove leaves and debris so that pools of water do not form
  • Keep lawns and gardens well maintained so that you are not providing shelter for adult mosquitoes
  • Install flywire screens on all windows and place self-closing wire screens on doors
  • check, repair and replace any screens with holes (screens should be no coarser than 12 x 12 meshes per 25mm)
Continue to be vigilant and protect yourself against being bitten by following the suggestions below:
  • Recognise and avoid areas of mosquito activity
  • Use repellents containing DEET (diethyl toluamide) or Picaridin and ensure they are used as per manufacturer’ instruction
  • Wear loose fitting and preferably light coloured clothing which covers as much of your body as possible
  • Plan outdoor activities. If you are hosting an outdoor BBQ have repellent available for your guests
  • Consider using residual surface sprays on structures particularly in shaded and sheltered areas. Use as per manufacturer’s instructions

 A Preliminary Notice to all community members
THE AGM FOR THE DUMBLEYUNG LANDCARE COMMITTEE WILL BE HELD IN MID OCTOBER.
 If you wish to JOIN this Committee please contact Claudia for more information at the Landcare Office on 986 34225.
Projects happening in the shire are;
  • Fauna and Bird monitoring project within the Dongolocking Reserves. This will be carried out until June 2018 and will investigate the variety of native animals, birds or feral pests that are habitating the bush reserves. Two workshops are planned to be held in the local area and will be coordinated by Edith Cowan University Staff as training workshops for Community members interested in discovering more about the local Fauna and Flora.
  • Funding opportunities are currently available for training workshops to cover a broad conservation aspect and free for local community members.
  • The Land for Wildlife Program is available if Farmers wish to have bush on their farm assessed for conservation value and receive a well-documented management plan.
  • State NRM will soon be announcing funding for successful projects submitted for 2017. One very worthy Shire project will hopefully receive funding assistance to protect bush areas across 2 properties. No other interest from within the Shire was received for additional projects.
  • A partnership with Greening Australia (WA) resulted in 4 sites being submitted for revegetation purposes under a Federal Grant. These sites include the establishment of fodder species that can be grazed after establishment.
  • The shire has committed funds to assist with the control of Bridal Creeper along Road Reserves. A Contractor is employed by the Katanning Landcare Office to spray the roadside reserves across 6 Shires and this project receives funding assistance from the State NRM Program.
  • Services available at the Landcare office include; organising conservation workshops and bird excursions, water testing for salinity, Regional Biosecurity advice in particular the Silverleaf nightshade declared weed and any other declared pest or weed in the Shire. Assistance with submitting revegetation projects, planning conservation projects, soil, tree, weed, farm planning and salinity advise, identifying local plant and animal specimens, disseminating information and a free cup of coffee.

15th and final extravaganza!

27/9/2017

After 15 years, Cambinata Yabbies will hold their final ‘Cambinata Extravaganza’ on Saturday October 7. A night of country glamour this silver service, five course dinner has seen award winning chefs from around Australia and the world serve amazing food. An event that has become a weekender on people’s ‘bucket list’ not only features fine food, but premium local wines and local bush poetry from Pat O’Neill.

Born from a vision Mary had in the early 2000’s to ‘create gourmet tours in the region’ and with a suggestion from a visiting professor from Curtin University the family took the idea of creating a ‘silver service dinner in the paddock and inviting the Prime Minister’ and brought it to life. The Nenke family converted the shearing shed into a function centre - removing yards, replacing the floor, and decorating walls which has created the country glam ambience it has today. It took three months for the Prime Minister at the time, the Hon John Howard to decline though the then WA Minister for Agriculture, the late Hon Kim Chance attended, along with four other politicians from various parties.

Since the event’s inception, amazing chefs have created delicious menus and wait staff have come from all walks of life across Australia and the world, including London and Moscow, to assist and not miss a fun night! As the event grew so has the function centre with a commercial kitchen installed in 2008 (thanks to a Regional Australia Grant) which now also hosts weddings and gala corporate events.

The event has previously catered for over 200 people with many utilising local accommodation options or camping on site. Although many were happy to camp the family recognised the shortfall in accommodation, and after a successful application in 2013 for a Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund Grant, eight cottages were built and cater up to 48 people. Mary’s Farm Cottages were completed in time for the 2014 Extravaganza.

The last ‘Cambinata Extravaganza’ will be held on Saturday October 7 at the Nenke Property. For more information please visit http://www.cambinatayabbies.com.au/extravaganza.html or contact Mary Nenke on 9864 6054.

Capacity - a wellbeing driver!

27/9/2017

Picture
A word that I feel is over used and out of context in the modern world today is the word ‘resilience’ and I would like to question the use of that word.  There is even a whole industry built around ‘resilience’ in the form of providing training and education services in this space.

Resilience is the correct word if used in the context of a person’s ability to ‘bounce back’ ie. recovering from shock or trauma.  However, when it is used about:-
  • our ability to cope with everyday life;
  • going through a shared adversity such as a natural disaster;
  • an adverse personal event (ie. death or illness);
it is often used out of context because these experiences encompass much more than just ‘bouncing back’.

Both on an individual basis and as a community it is not until we experience a traumatic event or been pricked by a circumstance that we will find out how resilient we are.  The public is telling us that all the time.

Consequently, when we use the word ‘resilience’ we are pigeon holing an individual and/or community into a category that ‘so called’ experts want us to fit into.  For example, after a traumatic event the experts are quick to say that the community and/or individual is ‘resilient’ rather than acknowledging that we all have a random ‘capacity’ when operating outside our comfort zone.  I suggest that a better baseline word to use to encapsulate all the times in our lives (the good as well as the challenging) is the word ‘capacity’.

Capacity is the capability to contain and accommodate stuff in our lives.  This conveys a positive vibe to us as we endeavour to maintain the right balance.

We are all born with a random capacity to deal with life’s issues.  It is a bit like a rubber band and we all know and recognise an individual’s capacity to operate fully, half, or to not appear stretched at all.  No matter what we are challenged by, we all have ups and downs, and the word ‘capacity’ allows us to capture our entire range of qualities be they good, bad or ugly and to then carry on and cope with what hand we are dealt with.

Our total state of physiological wellbeing is encapsulated in our individual capacity to both build stuff into our lives (something that is important for us blokes) and deal with stuff thrown at us from time to time through our life’s journey.

When we combine the capacity of us as individuals with us as a collective community we have harnessed an enormous capacity to live and thrive in rural and regional Western Australia.

When talking about individuals/communities we should coin our comments around capacity from a strength base platform rather than resilience ...this in turn will have a positive influence on our wellbeing.

CRC Positive Postcard Campaign!

27/9/2017

0 Comments

The Dumbleyung Community Resource Centre (CRC) have recently informed you of changes to its funding over the past few months including a contract reduction from 2 years and 9months to 18 months with a review to determine if funding is extended past March 2019.

Most recently, the McGowan Government handed down the 2017-18 state budget and forward estimates. As part of the Government review of all Royalties for Regions initiatives (which includes all CRC’s) we will see a 38.5% reduction in funding from the 19/20 budget onwards. This cut equates to approximately a $5million dollar reduction to the network, dropping from $13 million per year to $8 million per year.

We need to remember these are only forward estimates and your community hub, the Dumbleyung CRC is still here. The whole network is optimistic and hopes the review brings positive news for everyone! To assist us in sharing our good news stories and the impact CRC’s have in our communities, the network is working together on a ‘Positive Impact Postcard Campaign’.

The ‘Positive Impact Postcard Campaign’ is a simple way for you, our centre users and supporters, to share and highlight the reason/s why you love our centre! The postcards will be addressed and postage pre paid ready to be sent to Local Members in the Upper and Lower House of Parliament.

Help us demonstrate to our local members of government the importance of the CRC in our Shire! Pop into the CRC and complete a postcard, and we’ll make sure it gets to where it needs to be!

Below, is a flyer of what the ‘Positive Impact Postcard Campaign’ looks like, and how it works! 20,000 postcards have been printed to help spread the positive impact our centres are having across our great state! Pop in and see Ally, Davina or Paige and fill yours in today!
