Dumbleyung Tennis Club

Tennis is hotting up with good crowds coming along to Friday night tennis with the burgers being a big hit with families, weather perfect and the company awesome.  Budding enthusiasts entering for the following days Doubles Championships on Saturday 27 October 2018.

Saturday dawned, and Captains Glenn and Tara Ball drew the pairs for the day and just got it perfect. With many tiebreakers over the course of days play proving this was so, with 12 men and 8 women contesting this event.

With quite a few playing in their 1st Championships, they displayed courage, tenacity and with heaps of encouragement from the sidelines were ecstatic on the days tennis.  The men's final winners were young Rohan (Mr Bean) Morris only 18 years, winning his 1st championship playing with the 50-year-old sly cagey left-handed President, Jamie Dare. Rohan and Jamie defeated young guns Ethan Henry (who plays much like his mum Megan, but is a bit taller) and Mark Smith who has been seen getting tips off his mum Jane. The score in the final was 6-0 which did not reflect the game. A fantastic effort and brilliant playing by all players made for great tennis.

The women's event was a very close competitive competition, with tiebreakers all day.  Candice Ward in her 1st ever Championship played extremely well, rarely missing a serve; Pippa Bairstow travelling from Perth to play, was also seen to be getting a few tips off her father, Greg.  Net prowess by Leonie Nolte was in full force, very hard to get past her, a bit like the rhyme, ‘can't go under her, can't go over her, will try our best to go around her’.

The final winners, a rematch of the previous game which they lost in a tie-breaker, was Jane Coad and Tamara Bartram defeating Margie Ward and Pippa Bairstow 8-5.  Margie is still playing her usual consistent tennis and the dynamite badminton hit that is her trademark has not  slowed down even with her many years break from tennis.  Jane Coad certainly carried her aging partner with her agility, cross-court winning hits and brilliant serving, winning her 1st ever championships.  The Cowaramup Lassie who stole the heart of the Dumbleyung Laddie 12 years ago will also have reason to celebrate this win. It is her anniversary with the man who gave her everything he had that was important, his love.

Friday night tennis continues and, on the Sunday, a trip to Kukerin for the last pennant game before Christmas.

Kukerin Dumbleyung Cricket Club

The KDCC travelled to Pingelly on Saturday in round two of the season. With the side having quite a few regulars out it was going to be a tough ask.

Captain for the day, Scott Gray won the toss and elected to bat. The opening partnership once again did not yield to many runs as the boys lost the first wicket after only 4 runs. Kalan Joyce again anchored the middle order as wickets tumbled around him leaving the score at 6/40 until a mini fightback was mounted by Joyce and Lachy Ward. Not a lot of resistance was to follow these two, as the team limped to 107 off their 45 overs.

With a young enthusiastic Pingelly side it was always going to be tough to defend a small total and that was the case as the score was passed in the 29th over with only one wicket taken.

A disappointing result but considering a few regulars were missing the boys fought hard all day which is all we can ask for.

Top scorers – Kalan Joyce 51, Lachy Ward 19
Wicket Taker – Kalan Joyce 1/21

There is a bye this week then the following Saturday (November 10) we have our first home game in Kukerin where everyone is welcome to come along for a relaxing afternoon.

Kukerin Bowling Club

The annual A. & M. Williams Bowls Classic was played at the Kukerin Bowling Club last Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th of October in almost perfect conditions. This very popular event continues to attract bowlers from a large area of the S.W. of Western Australia including Albany, Middleton Beach, Emu Point, Dunsborough, Manning, Mundaring, Leeman, Quairading, Moodiarrup, Gnowangerup, Kulin, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Katanning, Newdegate and Kojonup.  The first day’s play saw some very competitive, close and high-class games with the Albany team leading narrowly from Gnowangerup and Middleton Beach on three wins each.

Day two saw many changes as each game finished and going into the sixth and final game the winners could have come from a number of teams.  The final result saw the Dunsborough team of E. Hoemburg, G. Benn, G, Oddy, and D. Henderson, come through on four wins and a draw, 18 points, from Quairading’s side of J. Gimbell, V. Hadlow, P. O’Hare, and C. Hayes four wins 16 points plus 40 shots up in second place and the team of M.Carey, S. Salomon, S. Lambert, and P. Barrow, from Manning in third spot with four wins 16 points plus 35 shots up and four other teams close behind on four wins and 16 points.

First day winners were D. Bairstow’s side from Albany and second day winners were M. Cousins and team from Mundaring.

Kukerin Bowling Club would like to thank all sponsors and visiting players for their continued support of this event.  Our wonderful band of ladies once again excelled themselves with their catering which drew praise from all players. Thank you ladies.

Saturday saw the continuation of the pennant competition with Kukerin hosting Kondinin in what what was expected to be a very tough contest as Kondinin have been a thorn in our side for some years, however Kukerin’s players stepped up to the mark and won comfortably on three rinks and only lost the fourth narrowly to record a good win and a 7—1 result.

The club triples were played on Sunday and the winners were G. Smith, T. Adams, and I. Faulkner who will now represent the club at the league triples on Sunday 18th November at Kukerin. Second place were M. King, P. Adams, and J. Adams.

Next Saturday Kukerin are at home for pennants against Karlgarin. There will be pennant practice for all who are available on Friday from 4.30 pm. Good luck and bowling to the ladies’ team travelling to Quairading later in the week.

Landcare Update

Silverleaf nightshade – Brief Overview
Silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) is a weed that reduces production in crop and pasture enterprises throughout the Australian wheat-sheep zone. It is a long-lived perennial plant with very deep, resilient roots. It grows during spring and summer and uses valuable moisture and nutrients needed for following crops and pastures. Crop yields can be reduced by 50 to 70% by dense infestations. Spread is relatively slow but, once established, it is extremely difficult to eradicate. Established dense infestations are an ongoing annual burden on productivity and costs, and there are limited suitable effective herbicide treatments that will kill dense infestations quickly. If you wish to receive a copy of the Silverleaf nightshade manual via email, please reply to landcare@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au or a hard copy can be made available by contacting the Landcare Office on 98634225.

Crown and root weevil released to control Patterson Curse, a declared weed
Mike Clark, Senior Biosecurity Officer with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Office in Narrogin, pictured below, recently released a biocontrol for the control of Patterson Curse.
This weed has spread across a few hectares within the vicinity of Brown Reserve, South of Dumbleyung in the last few years.
Control was necessary to minimise the spread of this weed, also known as Salvation Jane into the surrounding farming paddocks.
Using the biocontrol method of collecting live weevils from an infected area or nursery and transferring them onto live plants in another location has proved to be a very successful control to reducing plant numbers.
Mike said “It may take up to five years for the weevils to breed and multiply and reduce plant density until the infestation is reduced to manageable levels. This biocontrol method has proved very successful in the York area”.
Control of declared weeds on farms within the shire is dependent on the Farmer being vigilant in recognising and then controlling declared weeds. The Shire has the responsibility to control declared weeds on the shire road reserves.
Some of the more common declared weeds found in the shire are; Stemless and Saffron Thistle, Silverleaf Nightshade and One Leaf Cape Tulip.
Other environmental weeds that are being controlled or are required to be controlled in the Shire are, African Boxthorn, Bridal Creeper and Caltrop.
If you wish to gain more information about declared weeds, please contact the Landcare Office in Dumbleyung on 9863 4225 or landcare@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au

Grant gurus at the CRC

31/10/2018

On Thursday October 18, eight locals attended the CRC’s Grant Writing Workshop facilitated by Michelle Slarke. An interactive workshop, there was great discussion and questions from participants, learning the do’s and don’ts of what you should do before applying, when applying and once you have applied.

Attendees became grant gurus with feedback from the workshop including ‘Really good getting discussion and feedback from the group’ and ‘Thanks a lot to the Michelle and the CRC for organising a really informative session’.

An engaging evening with relevant information, participants went home with notes to put into practice when applying for their next grant.

Participants learnt and discussed,
  • Ask questions. Call the funding body and ask how will the grant be assessed and what other projects have been successful?
  • Have your ‘background’ ready! Many grants will ask for a background of your organisation and there is no need to recreate the wheel each time. Keep a short paragraph (or two) ready, include your mission statement and copy this across to each grant you apply for.
  • Make sure your timeline is realistic!
  • When you’ve completed your grant, read it out loud!
  • Whether you’ve been successful or not – always ask for feedback from the funding body.
Thanks to all who attended and to Michelle Slarke for facilitating the session. If you couldn’t attend but are interested in learning more about grant writing, please contact the CRC on 9863 4829 or email admin@dumbleyungcrc.com with your interest and we will look at hosting another workshop in the new year.

Pictured above L-R: Shire CEO M Gilfellon, Shire President J Ball, H Gooding and B Bray with the new CATS car
A lot of effort has finally paid off - the Car Assisted Transport (CATS) Vehicle for the Shire of Dumbleyung is here!

This car and process will provide a streamlined service to the city and large regional centres for those who are not confident or able to drive themselves. The system is designed to transport community members to specialised health appointments and can also accommodate emergency trips of a compassionate nature.

It is available to all Shire of Dumbleyung residents.

In the past, this need was met in part by the Narrogin CATS and we thank them for this. We would also like to acknowledge and thank their director Lynn Yorke who was instrumental in providing us with encouragement and all the information and documentation needed to help us set up our service. Our CATS model is based on the success of theirs – thank you!

Though, none of the above would have been possible if it weren’t for the Bain Family bequeathing their estate to our Shire, those who put their hands up to be volunteer drivers, our CEO Matt Gilfellon, Mary-Anne Davidson and the Shire Councillors who supported the proposal. Further thanks to Helen Gooding for her research, due diligence and presentation to Council and for taking on the role of Coordinator for the service.

A two year trial was approved and we ask community members who have a need to make use of this service. It’s here to help you!
Article by B.Bray

Other notes:
  • If you are eligible, register your name, the date and time of your appointment (appointments should be made after 11am) on the calendar provided for this purpose at the CRC.
  • You will receive a phone call from the coordinator explaining the process and next steps.
  • The Shire will be sending a mail drop to all residents explaining how the system will operate – please keep an eye out.

Kukerin Dumbleyung Cricket Club

The Kukerin Dumbleyung Cricket Club welcomed in the new season with a trip to Cuballing, with newly appointed skipper David Head steering the ship this year.
On arrival at Cuballing, the new captain’s worth was evident as he won the toss and elected to have a bat. Damion Leo and Matt Gilfellon were first to the crease as in previous years and nothing much had changed as one of them was out in the first over. Kal Joyce waddled to the crease (his pants had seemed to have shrunk in the wash over winter) and a fightback was on the cards as the score started to tick over slowly on a damp, doughy outfield. A steady flow of wickets were then to fall as Pete Joyce, Lee Smith and Ryan Taylor contributed 5 runs between them in the middle order to send the innings into a bit of trouble until Scott Gray and some big hitting from Sam “The Slugger” Pearce got the tally up to a defendable total of 124.
After smoko the boy’s knew they had a big task on their hands if they were going to win this one. The opening bowlers needed to get early wickets and bowl tight. They were rewarded with a couple of early wickets as the Cuby batsmen were tied down a bit by some good fielding and pressure. One example of this came from Harry “Sydney Harbour” Searle. The wickets continued to fall and after some resistance from a couple of lower order batsmen Cuballing were all out for 102.
Top scores -        Kalan Joyce- 35
                                Sam Pearce- 34

Bowling Fig-        David Head- 4/34
                                Scott Gray - 3/25

A great result first up for the club and a jovial bus trip home was had by all.
This Saturday the boys head to Pingelly for their round 2 fixture. If you’re keen to come and have a hit at training or play on weekends the club is always looking for extra numbers so, please come along.

Kukerin Bowling Club

Last Saturday Kukerin travelled to Newdegate for pennants. The game proved to be a very close contest played in difficult conditions with strong gusting breezes blowing across the green.  One Kukerin rink jumped out to a good lead early in the match and in the other three rinks Newdegate started well. However, as the afternoon wore on the early leading Kukerin rink continued to win comfortably whilst the other three games were closely fought out. In the final few ends, one Kukerin team gained a narrow win and the other two rinks were won by Newdegate which left Kukerin winning the match by the narrow margin of five shots and a 6---2 winning result.

Sunday saw the club pairs played and in the ladies event the pairing of Jenny Joyce and Debbie Smith won narrowly from Claudia Faulkner and Bev Davidson.   The men’s event was played as a round robin and Peter Davidson and Phil Adams were undefeated and won the event from Tim Adams and Ian Faulkner in second place in a three way count back.  The ladies and men’s winners of these events will represent Kukerin at the league pairs on Saturday 17th November.
The annual A.& M. Williams classic will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday this week and a result will be in next week’s edition of Quack Chat.

Next Saturday Kukerin are at home to Kondinin in the continuation of the pennant competition.  This will be an important game for the club as Kondinin have been a powerhouse of the competition for many years so a big effort will be required by all players selected.   There will be pennant practice from 4.30 pm on Friday for all who can make it.

Of the travellers last week, G. Smith, P. Davidson, I. Faulkner, and P. Adams were able to gain third place at Middleton Beach.

Next Sunday the club triples for ladies and men will be played. All those intending to play in the event please let the captain know by Saturday.  Starting time will be advised following the pennant game on Saturday evening.

Dumbleyung Tennis Club

Well the challenge was on, on Sunday 21/10/18 with the defending Dudinin team bringing a strong contingent of players for the rematch of last year's Grand Final.  The challenge was the wind nearly all day with Dudinin effortlessly controlling the play.  Many close matches, tiebreakers, making diving seem a form of art for 1 player turning 60 in Howie Ward.

Mention must be make of this momentous occasion as he won his singles yet again, Happy Birthday, and 1 team player in their 60's already, is really pleased that Howie has joined the elite 60's group.  Wife Margie was the shining light for the Dumbleyung team winning 4 sets, as well as making the cake for Howie.  Julie Ramm excelled this week with a 100% increase from last week winning 1 set, her singles.

Tara Ball also relishing the chance to play singles with another win this week.  Thanks to Rachael Springbett for making her 1st appearance for Sunday pennants for a while and winning 3 sets.  Great to catch up with the Dudinin crew and they were all wished a Merry Christmas and reminded that the Lawn Classic is in February.   Final Scores Dumbleyung 11 sets 146 games to Dudinin 23 sets 172 games.

Thank you to Dudinin who at last received the correct Pennant shield that was lost forever but found miraculously  after 2 years, so there definitely must be some sort of invisible fairy who returned it to the Club House.  A great spread was enjoyed by all at the end of the day’s play, so thank you to all.

Friday night social tennis is back on this Friday. On Saturday the club holds the Championship Doubles. Please get names into Glenn or Tara Ball. Don’t need to be a member to play. One o’clock start with bbq tea to follow. Please bring a salad to share. Meat available to purchase.
