Great Southern Midweek Tennis Association

Tennis Update

The Great Southern Midweek Tennis Association is in full swing with fabulous tennis, many laughs and those famous lunches making the 2019/20 a brilliant season so far.  Teams include Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kukerin, Lake Grace, Tarin Rock and the welcome addition of Kukerin New to the competition, enabling each team to play each other twice and have a home ground advantage.  All teams are challenged by the variety of court surfaces within the Association from synthetic grass to lawn to the brand new gel hard courts at Kukerin.

Wednesday 20 November marked Round 5 and gale force weather conditions.  There were probably a few choice aces and match play as a result of the wind!  Kukerin hosted Katanning and continued their perfect match play for the season with five out of five wins, cementing their top of the ladder status (which also was the first competitive game on the new courts! What a great start!).  Tarin Rock hosted Dumbleyung and Lake Grace hosted Kukerin New with the home teams both winning their respective matches.

Match scores Round 5
Kukerin (9 sets)                v              Katanning (0 sets)
Lake Grace (8 sets)          v              Kukerin New (1 set)
Tarin Rock (8 sets)           v              Dumbleyung (1 set)

Kukerin Bowling Club

Last Saturday there was a general bye in the pennant competition owing to the Ladies I.L.R.R. pairs, being played over the week-end.  With harvest drawing to a close ten men attended and played social bowls later in the afternoon.

Next Saturday the pennant competition resumes and Kukerin will travel to Kulin for our match. This will be a tough encounter as Kulin have been hard to defeat on their home green over many years so a good effort will be needed by all players.  There will be pennant practise for all available players from 5.00 pm Friday afternoon.

Next Sunday with harvest winding down it is planned to conduct a “Corporate Bowls” competition for all residents who can make the effort to come along and have some fun and socialise for the evening. Players intending to participate are asked to arrive at the club by 4.30 pm. For further information please contact Ross Ditchburn.

Dumbleyung Bowling Club

Triples and Pairs went down to Darkan on the weekend. Triples team included S. Hughes, G. Bateup, G. Cronin and pairs G. Jose and M. Roberts. Triples, we didn’t have a good day on Saturday but Sunday a different day, we jumped out of the blocks! The first two games and drew one. Last game tactics don’t put any close to the 8th end and it worked! One won! It took Goofy two days on the last end of the last game to get chalk on his bowl – over the moon you bloody beauty!

Pairs, two cocky little roosters won 3! Played some awesome bowls and someone had a wrong bias and a bottle of Baileys was bought – don’t know who that was Russel?

from our Shire President Julie Ramm
To Ratepayers of the Shire of Dumbleyung
As the newly elected President of the Shire of Dumbleyung I want to thank the Shire Councillors for their show of faith in electing me unopposed. I aim to uphold the position to the best of my ability.
To the outgoing President and who is now our Deputy President, Jacki Ball, I wish to thank Jacki for her dedication to the role over the last 2 years. Jacki has steered our ship well and on behalf of all Councillors I thank you for guiding us through a strong period of transition.
For those that don’t know me: I am married to Chris Ramm, have 2 grown children: Georgia and Jaxon and we farm cereals and sheep in the Nairibin/Datatine area. I have lived in Dumbleyung for 29 years and been actively involved in: Netball, Tennis, P&C, Hockey, Gymnastics, Bookclub, the CRC committee, Stubbs Park Board and other regional/state committees. I was also a book keeper off farm for many years but have ceased this to streamline my focus to our farm, family, friends and the role of Shire President.
During the elected term of 2 years as Shire President I look forward to working with Council, Shire staff and an engaged community to deliver key services and facilities. I aim to provide effective  leadership and communication within Council and our Community. My focus will be in providing good governance and sound financial management for ratepayers within the Shire of Dumbleyung

The ability for a Council to be successful hinges on open and clear communication. I aim to improve our communication methods to the Community and rely on you, the Community, for feedback. If anyone has queries or concerns regarding Council issues, please contact either myself on 0429642014, email: cr.ramm@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au or any of our Councillors: Jacki Ball, Grant Lukins, Catherine Watkins, Marilyn Hasleby, Amy Knight or Bevan Doney.
We are fortunate to have a staff of dedicated workers in our Shire providing administration, outside works and sound management and I want to take this opportunity to thank them all. Landcare Update

27/11/2019

Picture
Do you have Carnaby’s cockatoos nesting on, or near your property?  If you do, the Dumbleyung Landcare office would like to hear from you.  We also would like to hear if the birds have previously nested on your property or you have seen them fly over.

Carnaby’s cockatoos’ nest between July and January using tree hollows to raise 1 or 2 chicks per year.  During this period, the birds will forage within approximately 6km of their nest site to bring food back to their chicks.

Dumbleyung Landcare is working with the South West Catchments Council and Birdlife to halt the decline of the Carnaby’s cockatoo by improving their breeding success.  We are working to identify all known nesting sites within the Shire of Dumbleyung and to determine if there is enough foraging habitat available near these nesting sites.  The location of nesting sites that are no longer used is also very valuable information, and we are keen for these sites to be identified and remedied.

This project will run for 4 years to identify and improve as many nesting sites as possible.

Pollination and Farm Resilience Survey
South West Catchments Council is implementing a 4-year project with farmers to improve crop pollination in canola, avocados and orchards (apples, stone fruit).

If you farm one or more of these crops, and would like to take part in the project, please email Mike Christensen: mike.christensen@swccnrm.org.au, and we will start the process with a phone interview. Alternatively, you can do an online survey here.  (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JLNGZXV)

For those able to participate in a phone interview we will be giving you a $30 voucher to a rural supplier near you.

Tarin Rock Book update November 2019

27/11/2019

Early November at Tarin Rock and I immediately noticed that the Eucalypts are starting to flower. It has been quiet as not a lot of the trees or mallees have shown any inclination to produce any flowers during late winter and early spring this year.

From last month’s notice you might have heard that the walk through the reserve was well attended and that there was lots to see. Now, a month later, most of the obvious flowering activity has disappeared, however the beautiful beaufortias are in full bloom, especially B. incana and B. schaueri. B. incana especially would make a good garden shrub as it has a long flowering period and grows in sand or laterite. Another good garden plant would be Banksia sphaerocarpa var. caesia. Both plants would probably need a bit of pruning as they can grow rather wide. But they are waterwise plants and wouldn’t need much water after they have been established. I do not know if any local nurseries grow these plants but it might be good to ask around.

I found some new sun orchids last month, and am seeing plants that were not in flower last year. I am getting the distinct feeling that in this part of the Wheatbelt not only is the flowering related to rainfall, but a number of plants might not flower every year, and prefer to conserve their energy by putting it into new growth, or into underground tubers. Some plants regrow leaves every year, but if they haven’t had enough rain, (or a fire), no flower stalks will be formed. It doesn’t help either that our climate is changing so rapidly. This is rather frustrating as I only have a small window of opportunity to find the flowers of these species, and I can be looking for them for 2 years and not see any flowers. Such is currently the case with Chamaescilla spiralis, Microtis sp. (a Mignonette Orchid), and Drosera erythrorhiza (Red Ink Sundew). Or they flower for a short period when I am not around…. I was lucky enough to find a native storksbill, Pelargonium havlasiae in flower, which also grows in the damper areas of the reserve.

I was very fortunate this month to see a trigger plant (Stylidium neglectum) putting on a mass flowering display, offset by the yellow Waitzia everlasting, which complimented the pink carpet in the reserve. These are the things that give me great pleasure to see. It is comparable to the pink and white everlasting displays up north, but doesn’t last as long. I will be back from 2 till 7 December, focussing once again upon Eucalypts.

If you have any questions or want to assist, you can reach me by email at tarinrockbook@gmail.com or by phone on 0439978550.

Taking a stand against Violence - 16 Days in WA Campaign

27/11/2019

Picture
For the last two years key landmarks across Perth and throughout the state have been notably lit up in orange colours, as part of the campaign to stop Violence against Women in Western Australia. The McGowan Government and its first dedicated Minister for prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, the Hon Simone McGurk MLA have a program that runs annually for 16 days. The initiative began in 2017, running from the 25th of November til December 10th 2019.  Designed to bring attention to how we treat women and how violence – any kind of violence – can affect women and the community.

In 2018, Western Australia recorded the largest number of family and domestic violence related homicide offences across the nation. To assist in shining a light on these horrible acts of violence the campaign includes local events, media, social media and other awareness raising activities to promote positive outcomes and inspire action.

The campaign also highlights organisations, agencies, communities and individuals working to end violence against women. Throughout the state they have an opportunity to show their support for ending violence against women, including family, domestic and sexual violence.

There are many ways you - individuals, groups and communities can speak out about violence. The Dumbleyung Community Resource Centre has orange badges you and your staff can wear to recognise the 16 days in WA Campaign. Pop in and grab one today or for more information please click the link below:
 https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/media/2051/16-days-in-wa-resource-kit.pdf

If you or someone you know need help please seek more information at www.1800RESPECT.ORG.AU or call the free 24hr emergency Domestic Violence Helpline on 1800 007 339.
