To summarise the project, we are working with the concept of the photos being of settling families, sporting groups and some interesting facts including sport, farm practices and structures. We are also documenting all families past and present in the ‘Families’ list. The majority of the sign content has been compiled from previous history publications.
The aim of this project is to document our history in a way that is also interesting to our future generations and tourists as part of a drive trail. You are welcome to forward this to anyone who may be interested in a final read.
There is also an updated Locality Map which now includes the school sites. You can download this map here:https://www.dropbox.com/s/bamhhw8hzc676gv/170516%20SHIRE%20HISTORIC%20LOCALITY%20MAP%20SM.jpg?dl=0

In this weeks sport update:
-Kukerin Bowling Club
-Dumbleyung Tennis Club

Kukerin Bowling Club

Kukerin hosted Lake Grace in the final game before the Christmas break. The game was played in good conditions and the Kukerin side got away to a good start on all four rinks and and as the game wore on continued to play well and won the game convincingly with an  8 –0 win.  This leaves Kukerin in second spot on the pennant ladder.

Sunday with our five round robin players away playing in trial games at Kulin a small but dedicated group of bowlers played social bowls in very trying conditions before retiring to the comfort of the clubhouse to enjoy a bit of socialising. We welcomed visitors Garry George and Sandra Tremowden for the afternoon who enjoyed a game with us.

Please check your emails regularly for bowling notes from the Captain during the Christmas and New year period  regarding  competitions and playing times e.t.c.

As this is the final news before Christmas we wish all of our bowling friends and the general public a safe peaceful Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year

Community call to find missing Malleefowl
Have you seen the elusive and endangered native Malleefowl in your local area?  If you have, we want to hear from you!

The much-loved Malleefowl is renowned for its fascinating behavior.  The bird builds a huge compost mound to generate heat for incubating its eggs.

Known populations of Malleefowl are currently monitored in the Wheatbelt areas north-east of Perth and southern areas, such as Ongerup. Historically, however, they inhabited the South West from Margaret River to Dumbelyung.

Bushland clearing, feral predators and other pressures have dramatically reduced the bird’s distribution, but the South West Catchments Council (SWCC), in partnership with the National Malleefowl Recovery Team (NMRT), have launched a new project to discover if any Malleefowl are still living in the South West.

The project wants to hear from community members, farmers, wildlife enthusiasts or even motorists who might have seen Malleefowl, particularly in the Shires of  Wickepin, Dumbleyung, Kent, Katanning, Woodanilling, Wagin, Narrogin, Kojonup and West Aurthur, to contact NMRT Project Officer Liz Kington to report the sighting.

Liz can be contacted on lizk@nationalmalleefowl.com.au or on 0417 996 719.

This project is supported by the South West Catchments Council through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landare Program.

REPORT UNVEILS WA GROWER GROUPS $3B VALUE
A Grower Group Alliance-commissioned study has shown grower groups have contributed $3 billion dollars to the WA economy over the past 25 years.
The study report is the first of its kind to determine the economic and social value that grower groups provide to farmer members, research & development corporations, sponsors and the wider WA agriculture industry.
GGA strategic advisory group chairperson Kelly Manton-Pearce said the report provided a compelling case for the importance of grower groups as an economic driving force in regional WA.
“Grower groups are an incubation hub for the next leaders in agriculture, providing skills and opportunities for staff and members to learn skills in governance, finance, sponsorship and funding,” she said.
“Across the agriculture industry there is strong support for grower groups in WA as the groups play a crucial role and are a valued local conduit between farmers and the agricultural research and development sector.”

Name: Melissa (Mel) Ogilvie

Occupation: Part time farmer

How long have you lived in Kukerin/Dumbleyung? 12 years

Favourite thing about Christmas/New Year holiday? Making time for things that you may not get to do during the rest of the year.

Where will we find you this summer? Probably fencing or at the Lake!

Hot (roast) or cold (seafood) Christmas lunch? I will say cold even though I’m having a hot roast

Do you make a New Year’s resolution and if so have you ever successfully completed one? I don’t make New Year’s resolutions.

Would you rather go paragliding off the Himalayas or Bungee Jumping in New Zealand? Paragliding off the Himalayas.

Have you ever broken a bone? If so how? Yes, it was my ring finger.

Thank you Melissa Ogilvie for being this week’s local of the week! If you would like to nominate someone to be local of the week in 2018 send the CRC an email, admin@dumbleyungcrc.com

What’s in the box? It’s Donald Campbell!

20/12/2017

As you drive through Dumbleyung, you may have seen a large metal box recently enclosed with glass on Absolon Street – you may have even asked yourself, what is that?

Well your questions have been answered – it’s the latest addition to the Bluebird display in Dumbleyung. An extra-large replica/bust of Donald Campbell made completely of chicken wire! Approximately one to two metres tall and a metre wide the replica was made by Australian artist Ivan Lovatt. Ivan has created a number of pieces including replicas/busts of animals, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson.

An idea of local Robbie McDougall, we congratulate you and your team on all your hard work and fundraising efforts to make this unique idea a reality! Donald Campbell is located on Absolon Street next to the CRC and will soon have lights connected and an information plaque installed. Make sure you stop and have a look at this amazing piece of art the next time your passing through Dumbleyung.

Hello from CSBP

20/12/2017

To the farming communities of Kulin, Wickepin, Tincurrin, Kukerin and surrounding areas.

I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Shane 'Arg' Argent. It gives me great pleasure to announce that I have been given the opportunity to represent CSBP Fertilisers in your district covering the Kulin Area Manager role for Maree Dougall who has gone on maternity leave over the next 12 months, and in saying, we wish her all the very best of luck.

For those of you who don’t know me, I have grown, lived, worked and socialised in and around the areas all my life. I grew up on the family farm in Pingaring, 48 kms east of Kulin, which has a mixed cropping and sheep enterprise and still is being run by my family to date. I have spent the best part of 20 odd years around Kulin and districts, surrounding myself with agriculture as a shearing contractor and worked in Rural Merchandise for the past 3 years prior to joining CSBP in March this season at Customer Service in Kwinana.

I have a good love of sport which has also seen me play football, tennis and golf around the districts over the years. I had the privilege to play for Kulin/Kondinin and Kukerin on the football field and have swung a tennis racquet on nearly all the courts within our district as well.

I enjoy being actively involved within communities at all levels and really understand what it takes to make a community and enterprise succeed. Currently my family and I reside in Waikiki, where our boys attend school and my wife teaches lower primary. We are very excited about my role as Kulin Area Manager, and look forward to spending time amongst the people we have known all our lives and to meet and enlarge our circle of friends to the new faces that I’m about to embrace strive for.

Along with CSBP and your local sales agents I look forward to the challenges and successes the coming year brings. So here’s to good product, good service and good results for this harvest and the next.

Wishing you all the best over harvest and the festive season.

Regards,
Shane (Area Manager Kulin) pictured below:

Playgroup graduates(from top to bottom): A.Roberts, K.Smith, M.Smith and E.Bartram.
It was a glorious morning to end the Playgroup year, complete with a delicious morning tea feast to celebrate Christmas and our Graduating Playgroup friends plus a first birthday surprise!  Jingle Bells filled the air as eighteen kids had a wonderful time playing outside in the sandpit, seesaw, swings and climbing frame, while Mums, Grandparents and an Uncle watched on and enjoyed a few morning tea treats themselves.  We also celebrated the first birthday of Phoebe Bairstow, who will turn one this Saturday! Happy Birthday Phoebe!

It’s been a wonderful year for Dumbleyung Playgroup with many new families, a successful Melbourne Cup Luncheon Fundraiser and nine new (baby) members joining us in 2017! Belated congratulations, to the Gilfellon and Shepherd families with the healthy and gorgeous arrivals of Leo and Kyra. What a beautiful year it has been and a delight to watch our little ones grow up!

This year, four of our Playgroup members will be moving onto Kindy in 2018.  Dumbleyung Playgroup wish Angus Roberts, Eloise Bartram, Mia Smith and Kelsie Smith all the best with their new school adventures and thank them for being a part of Playgroup for the last four years.

We also bid a sad farewell to a few of our families who have supported the Dumbleyung Playgroup collectively for 23 years!  James and Shonel Bennett (Evelyn, Dayna, Sophie and Katie), Troy and Carly Smith (Jaxon, Koby and Mia) and Drew and Laura Bartram (Flynn, Bridie and Eloise), Dumbleyung Playgroup extends a heartfelt thank you for all of your support and commitment to our wonderful little Playgroup.  We wish you all the best for the future and will miss you all immensely!

Dumbleyung Playgroup will resume in February 2018, which will be another fun-filled year for the little ones in our community! Thank you to all our members, our community and the Shire for all of your support throughout 2017!  We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.  We look forward to seeing you all in 2018!

Santa swaps sleigh for a boat at Dongo Christmas Tree!

20/12/2017

Picture
Pictured above: Santa upon arrival in his dinghy.
On Sunday December 17, and much to the delight of the over 25 children, Santa arrived at the community Christmas Tree at Dongolocking in appropriate style. Given the floods at the end of last summer Santa decided to hop in the back of the Dongolocking Creek Rescue Unit( aka a motorless dinghy.)

Arriving between sprinkles of rain, Santa and his helpers were pleased to not get wet as the gail force winds wouldn't allow for an umbrella!!

The well sheltered outdoor area was greatly appreciated by all, keeping everyone happy and dry.

The ‘Merry Man in Red’ had the audience laughing and singing along as he did a wonderful rendition of Jingle Bells along with a happy jingling dance. Then it was present time for all the good boys and girls of Dongolocking!

Santa may have eaten a bit more this year with a little extra excitement, as the hitch of the boat trailer broke when the 'Merry Man in Red' left - please note Santa was not injured in this incident.

The ever popular raffle was a highlight with young and old. With so many brightly gift wrapped hampers,  nearly everyone got a prize and a lucky few more than one!

Jason Smith thanked Carly Smith, Matt Gilfellon, the Shire of Dumbleyung and Royalties for Regions for their fantastic contributions towards the successful enclosure. The new additions to the Dongolocking hall were perfect for the summer storm rain and wind – and all noted that the regular tarps wouldn't have survived the day, never lone the night.

It was hoped that Santa's boat arrival wouldn't spark a return of the February flood. Fortunately, the rain abated towards the end of the evening, leaving a sparkling starry night sky. The summer night sky was enjoyed by all as the generator ran out of fuel and the lights flickered to an end -marking the closure of another successful annual Dongolocking festive celebration!
