John Colwill and Garry Heady hosted a small group in the Community Garden from 3-4pm before hosting the GardenWise seminar at the Stubbs Park Pavilion. Those who attended the seminar said it was interactive, interesting, fun and thought provoking.
John and Garry debunked a lot of myths and attendees went home with tips, ticks and knowledge such as,
- Feeder roots for plants and trees are mostly found in the top 30cm so this is where we need to concentrate our attention and anything added below this point (ie at point of planting) may not be beneficial
- It is a fallacy that the roots only go as wide as the foliage or branch width, therefore fertiliser needs to be applied from the drip line out to get the feeder roots
- Healthy soil is the most important thing. The worst thing is over digging the soil
- There are 4 – 9 billion living species in a handful of soil
- All spiders are good!
