Scams that have been reported include attempts to steal personal information, infect devices with malware and adverts with false information or scam products. An example includes an email with fraudulent logo claiming to be a part of a Health Alert Network. The email provides a list of local active infections before asking recipients to click on a link in an email, logging in again and stealing log in credentials.
What should you be aware of?
- Double check who the ‘from’ email address is
- Be wary of emails or phone calls offering unexpected or unpromoted information including emails with unfamiliar sources and links or attachments
- Access all information from credible sources including https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov
- Facebook is trying to crack down on adverts spreading coronavirus conspiracies, but keep in mind some may make it past their review process. Be sure to only access official sources.
