Apprentice Jockey Aaron Mitchell stole the show as Cougar Express ($7) pipped favourite Falcon Crest ($2.30). The biggest win of his career, the apprentice jockey at only 20 years of age, rode extremely well and did not let his height and weight limit him. Mitchell is the tallest jockey in WA at 183cm which restricts his riding weight to 55kg.
Lindsey Smith, trainer of Cougar Express, praised Mitchell and Kalgoorlie trainer Peter Fernie for their assistance leading up to the big race.
The winning horse, Cougar Express, is owned by the following locals – RW Ditchburn, JR Leo, ML Norrish, NP Ditchburn, TR Ditchburn, TE Leo, DJ Leo, GJ Taylor and TC Reid.
