Over 50 people attended the event with sparkling wine flowing, lots of catching up and mingling, and a few even took to the new courts to see if they still had the netball touch! President Roisin Ball welcomed everyone to the courts and took us on a walk down memory lane – from 1978/1979 when netball first began in Dumbleyung – to playing as we do now in the Katanning Netball Association. After a small recess the club resumed in 1990, and this is the anniversary we celebrate, since this is the year in which the club actively started documenting.
President Roisin Ball also made mention of how great it was to see some of the founding members at the reunion, including Leanne Smith, Esther Forbes, Dawn Fox, Lynette Symington, Derryn Edwards, Lorna Cronin and Linlee Taylor (just to name a few). Roisin recognised all past players for making the club what it is today, and gave a quick recap on what the club has been up to in the past 10 years since the 20 year reunion, including fundraising efforts, recruiting new members and the new netball court!
Everyone gathered onto the court at sunset to watch and celebrate as Roisin officially cut the red ribbon and announced the courts open! All guests took their memorial glasses to the Grand Olde Dumbleyung Inn (GODI) to continue the celebrations and walk down memory lane with lots of photos showing the life of the club so far – including all the on (and off) court antics!
Before dinner was served, Roisin was joined by Vice President Pip Gooding and life members, Derryn Edwards, Louisa Dare and Katrina Gray for the final presentation of a new life member of the club! Congratulations and well done to long overdue life member of the Dumbleyung Netball Club, Esther Forbes.
Excerpts from life member, Louisa Dare’s speech below:
During the years of 1981-1986 Esther was integral in the formation of the Dumbleyung Netball Club, boosting the essence of the club with two teams. Unfortunately, after five years, dwindling numbers resulted in the club going into recess after the 1986 season. Esther was a Club member from the onset and was part of the second re-launch with Derryn Edwards to kick start what we now call ‘Dumbleyung Netball Club in the modern era’, tonight being the 30th Anniversary of this time.
In 1990, Esther took on the roles of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Coach and worked tirelessly to build a strong foundation for a solid club return. Esther achieved this in spades in the first year with the formation of two teams and an A Grade Premiership. Esther is a tire-less can-do girl, who has a knack for assembling and motivating people. Esther was President for the first three years of this new era.
During Esther’s 16 year playing career she played predominately in the first team, and took on the roles of,
- President – three times
- Coach – five times
- Awarded coveted Club Girl Trophy in 2006
- Playing in excess of 250 games
