Kukerin Practical Pistol Club officially opened in February 1983 and held its first Steel Challenge in September of that year. Over the years there has been many improvements to our ranges and clubhouse facilities and we are now considered as the best club in the state.

Memberships cater for men, ladies and juniors and we also have disability access. Current members travel from Cranbrook, Katanning, Tincurrin, Lake Grace, Pingrup, Corrigin, Perth, etc
Over the years we have had three Dumbleyung Shire Sports Star of the Year Awards  and club members representing national and state teams. One club member won a stage medal at the Adelaide World Shoot  IX . We have five Life Memberships.

The Steel Challenge is an international event held all over the world but originated from the USA. This event is a speed shoot and requires shooters to engage a series of plates and gongs in a variety of configurations in the quickest time. A variety of pistols and calibres can be used such as a .22 rim fire, standard production gun,  auto 9 ml,  auto 38 super, revolvers, etc. The club decided to open the event up to all state shooters and thus introduced the Kukerin Open Steel Challenge which is now held in September every year. It has become affectionately known as the “best shoot in the west”. This event is open to all pistol shooters.

The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) - West Australian Branch then asked us to host the SSAA State Steel Titles every year as we were the only club in the state which had enough ranges and facilities to enable the event to be run successfully. We now host the Titles annually in March. From this event a team is selected to represent our state and travel to the National Titles which are held in a different state each year. Club members, having done this for a number of years, then put their hands up and offered to host the event in Western Australia as it had never happened before. Thus the 2016 National Steel Shoot was held in our state and in Kukerin for the first time. Feedback from our interstate and state shooters was very positive and assure us that we will now be in the rotation system to host the event again.

People travelled from far and wide with the furthest coming from Queensland. Shooters camped on range, stayed in local hotel, local houses and at Marys Cottages.
The club hosted a meet and greet BBQ on range Thursday night Friday night was a delicious Roast Dinner by the local Kukerin Bowling Club, Saturday night was a delightful dining experience in a shearing shed at Cambinata Yabbies and Sunday back to the club for a farewell BBQ.
