In May 2013 the Shire of Dumbleyung was the sole beneficiary to the Estate of Ian Bain. The will contained a wish that the money be used to assist sporting groups, emergency organisations and hospital services within the shire; however the wish does not impose an obligation to restrict spending to these three areas. The intention of Council is for the Bain Estate Distribution to be used for the benefit of the shire over a thirty year period of time. The aim is to distribute the money to the community in similarly equal distributions over the thirty year period, taking into account the time value of money.
East Dumbleyung declared water deficient
A 'Water Deficiency Declaration' is a government response to safeguard the commercial interests of farmers during very dry periods. A declaration occurs when a group of five or more farmers require water from an off-farm source and must travel greater than a 40-kilometre radius from their farm to get this.
A declaration requires the government to provide water for livestock needs at a central storage point.
The process leading to a declaration of 'water deficiency' involves a local government making a formal request to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation which, after consulting with the Department of Agriculture and Food, makes a recommendation to the Minister for Water.
The Minister has announced the Water Deficiency Declaration for East Dumbleyung. Water is currently being carted into tanks located at Nenke Park in Kukerin.
Farmers who have registered their stock numbers will be contacted by the Shire via SMS when the water supply is ready to be accessed.
This non-potable water supply is available for registered users only under the Water Deficiency Declaration – for emergency stock water only. Signs will be placed on the tanks to advise this. Farmers can be added to this list however they must contact Claudia Hadlow at the Landcare Office on 0429 612 447 or 9863 4225 or the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation on 98410100.
The water supply will be monitored; however, Farmers will be asked to work together to advise each other of tank levels or have allocated days to access the water. If supplies are not keeping up or there are carting issues, please let the Shire know immediately. Also please report if you sell livestock or receive rain and no-longer need to access the water from Nenke Park.
