Awareness of the legislation, regulations and local laws that the shire is tasked with enforcing
A little while ago I was playing with my daughter in the backyard. She started saying something which at first I did not understand but then it became clear. She could hear a rooster crowing somewhere in town and was copying the cock-a-doodle-doo. I found this incredibly adorable but then also thought, ‘roosters aren’t allowed in town’.
There are a few things that I see around that are technically against the various bits of legislation, regulations and local laws that the Shire is tasked with enforcing. I thought I would point out some of these just so everyone is aware of them and can do something about them before we reach the point of having to enforce the rules.
Roosters, Geese, Turkeys, Peafowl and Gamebirds
Under Council’s Health Local Laws a rooster, goose or gander, turkey, peacock or peahen or gamebird cannot be kept within the townsite without written approval from Council.
Caravan and Camping
Under the Caravan and Camping Ground Act a person cannot camp on land for more than 3 out of every 28 days. This includes camping in a caravan on your own property. Council can give permission to camp up to 3 months out of every 12 months.
Truck Parking
Parking a vehicle (or combination) on a street in a built up area that is longer than 7.5 metres or with a GVM of greater than 4.5 tonnes for more than an hour is not allowed under Council’s Parking and Parking Facilities Local Laws.
Swimming Pools
A building permit is required to install a pool and safety barrier. Once installed a pool safety barrier inspection needs to be regularly conducted. We are currently in the process of organising a round of pool safety barrier inspections. If you do not think the Shire knows about your pool, please get in touch so that you can be added to our list.
Sea Containers
Sea Containers require a building permit and potentially planning permission.
Farm Buildings
All farm buildings, apart from a certain class of shed, require a building permit and planning permission. Workshops, sea containers and dongas are not exempt from these requirements.
Retrospective Building Permits and Planning Permits are available. If you think you may have an issue in regards to building or planning, please get in touch with our Building Surveyor or Town Planner.
Building Surveyor – Josiah Farrell -  bs@narrogin.wa.gov.au
Town Planner – Joe Douglas – 9303 2532 / 0429 303 100 or joe@urp.com.au
Other enquiries can be directed to me, Matthew Gilfellon, 9863 4012 orceo@dumbleyung.wa.gov.au

For more information on the Shire of Dumbleyung Historical Locality Signs Project, please read below:
The Candlelight Historical Locality Sign, will be 90cm x 60cm in size when printed.
To summarise the project, we are working with the concept of the photos being of settling families, sporting groups and some interesting facts including sport, farm practices and structures. We are also documenting all families past and present in the ‘Families’ list. The majority of the sign content has been compiled from previous history publications.
The aim of this project is to document our history in a way that is also interesting to our future generations and tourists as part of a drive trail.
You are welcome to forward this to anyone who may be interested in a final read. There is also an updated Locality Map which now includes the school sites. You can download this map here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bamhhw8hzc676gv/170516%20SHIRE%20HISTORIC%20LOCALITY%20MAP%20SM.jpg?dl=0
If you have any trouble downloading the large files (Best for zooming in), a printed copy can be viewed at the shire office or if you wish to receive automatic email updates and view all the sign drafts for this project, you can subscribe here: http://eepurl.com/cQExx1.
