Association president Darren Kirby welcomed all and thanked Association secretary Kim Gooding for his work throughout the year. Kukerin Tennis Club was thanked for their hospitality in holding the final, which is hosted each year on a rotational basis.
To get to the final, Kukerin had a convincing win over Tarin Rock whilst Dudinin defeated Dumbleyung, to come in as number 1 for the final and unbeaten for the season.
After some hard-fought matches in humid conditions, Kukerin headed into the Mixed round with a strong lead, 16 sets to Dudinin’s 6 sets. Whilst it was possible for the cards to turn if Dudinin trumped the mixed, it was a definite long shot.
Despite some fantastic rallies and great tennis, Dudinin was unable to rattle Kukerin who stayed focussed on the prize and broke the drought, their first win since 2001. It was also pointed out that it was Kukerin’s first grand final win since the change in the Association.
The end result was Kukerin 23 sets, 188 games to Dudinin 11 sets, 133 games.
Well done to Dudinin’s Deb Doney who won the Liz and Owen Dare shield with 27 sets won through the season, from runner up Nathan Ditchburn (Kukerin) on 25 sets.
Thank you to all the spectators who attended to support both teams and enjoy some good tennis and comradery.
Congratulations to Kukerin on their resounding win!
