Kukerin Bowls Update

Debbie Smith and Clive Bahr played in the S.C.A.B. League singles last Saturday in very hot and trying conditions at Lake Grace.  Unfortunately both players were able to only win one game in their section and were therefore were eliminated. Sunday saw a good number of men play twilight bowls after the heat of the day had gone.

This week we wish good bowling to Debbie Smith, Bev Davidson and Therese King who will be Kukerin’s representatives in the S.C.A.B.L Ladies round robin bowls carnival at Esperance. Later in the week two teams of men will travel to Perth for the Annual Country Week Championships and we also wish them well.

Dumbleyung/Kukerin Cricket Update

Kukerin-Dumbleyung travelled to Williams on Saturday to play a weakened Williams team. On a hot day Captain Kalan Joyce won the toss and elected to bat, much to the relief of most of the team.

Williams took an unusual strategy by opening the bowling with a spinner and it worked, restricting the Kukerin-Dumbleyung run rate to a slow crawl. As the runs were slowly added to the scorebook the wickets were too and the position started to look shaky. Kalan Joyce was digging in but was struggling to find a partner to hang around with him. Enter Conan Holder who came in and made the bowling look rather pedestrian. Conan hit boundary after boundary before falling just before his half century. Kalan continued his defiance and with the tail end of the batting lineup was able to ensure that Kukerin-Dumbleyung batted their overs, being the second last wicket to fall on the second last ball. Kukerin-Dumbleyung finished their innings on 9/186.

David Head and Scott Gray opened the bowling and when the openers were dismissed in successive overs an early finish looked promising. Williams then dug in, seeing off the openers and the first change bowlers. Eager to get out of the heat the Captain decided to try something different and threw the ball to Pete Joyce and Lee Smith. With a bigger variety than Shane Warne, Pete Joyce bamboozled the batsmen with his combination of full tosses, low full tosses and high full tosses and the wickets started falling. After supporting Pete for a few overs Lee then got into the action knocking over two batsmen in one over. Pete and Lee ran through the Williams line up, picking three wickets each. The openers were then brought back to finish the innings off and after some time, the final wicket was claimed. Williams were all out for 120.

The win guaranteed Kukerin-Dumbleyung a place in the finals. There is one game left to play against Narrogin at Dumbleyung on Saturday starting at 12:30. The games between the two teams have always been close with some high scoring games so be sure to make it down to check out the action.

                        K. Joyce 68                                                     L Smith 3/16 (5)
                        C Holder 44                                                     P Joyce 3/45 (5)
