Kukerin Bowling Club

Cool windy conditions greeted bowlers for opening day of the 2016-17 bowling season on Sunday last week.  A small but dedicated group of bowlers turned up and after a quick working bee to tidy the surrounds and set out rink markers, captain Graeme Smith organised teams and a couple of social games were played to complete the day.

The pennant competition is upon us early this season and Kukerin will be travelling to Newdegate next Saturday for the first game of the season. There will be pennant practise on Friday afternoon from 4.30 pm for those that can make it. Hope to see a good roll-up and teams will be announced after practise.

Best wishes to Matthew King for a speedy recovery from recent surgery on a knee and hope he will be back with us soon. Also best wishes for the future to our youngest member Paul King and Aimee Parry who were married recently.

Next Sunday there will be social bowls commencing at 1.30 pm.

On Friday October 7 the ‘in’ place to be was the Dumbleyung Tennis Club. The place to enjoy tennis on grass courts, catching up with your mates, a schoolies convention with the young men and women (not kids anymore) giving some of the more mature players a lesson in tennis, the best burgers in town cooked by the professionals -Tara Ball and Carmen Bairstow, welcoming our new players and social troops, play dates for the youngsters and future tennis champs - you name it the Dumbleyung Tennis Club will supply it.

30 players enjoyed the almost, near perfect night, - no rain, no wind but plenty of mosquitoes on number 6, laughter and tennis.  A clock tournament was run with play for 15mins, the eventual winner being Daniel McDougall for the men and a 3way tie for the women, Tara Ball, Carmen Bairstow and Tiffany Gossage with Tiffany picking the lucky number.

Friday 14th October will be the SolarisCare Fundraiser  Hopman Cup style, sponsored by SportsPower who will have the usual array of items to buy, commencing at 5.30pm, so find a team of 4, bring your chairs, nibbles, tennis racquets, some mosquito repellent  and come along for a great night.  If you can't find a team, and would just like to enter please give your names to either Tara Ball, (dumballs1@bigpond.com) or Captain, Drew Roberts (drewluke27@yahoo.com.au) and they will allocate you a team – please notify either Tara or Drew by Wednesday if possible. Those who are in town we’d love to see you there as we have managed to plan it on the same weekend as the Justins’ wedding - an early congratulations to Brynn and Sophie who will wed this weekend.

Wednesday ladies pennants starts on the 12th with a home game.  The 1st weekend pennant match will be on Sunday 16th October at Kukerin commencing at 1.00pm. If you are interested in playing pennants for the season please give your names to Drew or Glenn Ball 0407612094. Still looking for a ladies captain, let Jamie know if you are keen! Otherwise, maybe Tara can talk Glenn into it as a sort of vice/ ladies!

Thanks to our helpers for marking the courts at the busy bee last Friday.

The Dumbleyung Bowls Opening Day held on Sunday 9 October commenced with a great rollup of 18 keen players vying to get their photo in the Quack Chat and making sure that they were showing the paparazzi their best side, smiles and styles on the day.

Our regulars, Ken, Margaret, John, and Karen from Katanning made their way over for the afternoon. One member,  Karen Hall, a hot air balloon enthusiast, enjoyed the sights from a great height in Northam earlier that morning (3.30am to be exact) then raced to Dumbleyung to play at the opening day- that is what one would call keen.

Great to see newcomer Marcia Kemble, who was visiting her sister Karen, getting into the swing of things and even, I think, having a few drives, but the best drive was probably the one coming up from Mandurah. The teams were well matched, in talent and voice, with the eventual  winners being  Captain Russell Hall, Tania Kirk, playing in the magnificent bowls shirt & winning the best dressed for the day, Helen Gooding and Margaret Ennis 2 wins +13.

Fridays will be training/ practise/ social bowl for those wishing to play pennants, play bowls and to enjoy the atmosphere at the Dumbleyung Club for the night.  The 1st pennant match for the men will be on Saturday 15th October at Wagin 1.00pm start.  If you are interested in playing pennants this year please give your name to Russell or a club member.

Pennants for the women commence on Tuesday 18th October at Dumbleyung against Kojonup Gold.  Names and dates that you are available are to be given to Pennant Captain, Karen Ward, or to our regular Captain Audrey Bateup.  Subs to be paid immediately and are $75, non-members (of the Dumbleyung District Club) $90 but please check with Treasurer, Owen Dare or President Karen Ward.  There will be a committee meeting on Wednesday October 12 at 7.00pm.

To conclude the bowls open day Karen thanked everyone for making it an enjoyable afternoon and informed everyone that jobs will soon be given to members to lighten the load for all.  So if you would like to offer your help in a particular area please speak or email Karen.
