Dumbleyung Junior Hockey Club

Picture
The Dumbleyung Junior Hockey (pictured left) team played their first game for the season at the weekend with eight Year 2’s and 3’s stepping up to take the field. Even though they went down 5-0 to a much stronger and older side, they still persisted throughout the game.

Our senior players had some big shoes to fill and they did well. Evelyn Bennett started as centre-half with some hard running back into defence. Sara Hanson and Sydnee Wright ran their little hearts out in the mid-field with Isabel Koster and Hannah Cronin who, playing her first game, had the heavy task of playing half backs getting back into defence and trying to support their forwards.

Eden Bairstow played in the centre forward and listened well at half time as he had some spectacular runs with the ball moving into space to open up the play.
The first 15 minutes of the first half was awesome with lots of play mid-field. But credit to Saints, they kept the pressure on and Dumbleyung were struggling to get the ball out of defence.

We had Michael Hanson, Max Coad and Jasmine Cronin on debut playing in the fullback positions; they were incredible, gutsy and put in every effort on the field. Also on debut Dayna Bennett, Sophie Bennett and Flynn Bartram who filled in as wings.

Huge thanks to Courtney Dewing who played in goals for Dumbleyung. Courtney had a lot of action and kept up the positive talk to her backs as they learnt the ropes of Junior Hockey.
Best players were Isobel Koster, Courtney Dewing and Michael Hansen.

The children looked confident and professional in their brand new uniforms which were able to be purchased by a very generous grant from McDonalds Junior Sports Trust. Thank you to Carmen Bairstow for taking on the coaching role again this year.

Kukerin Lake Grace Hockey Club

On Saturday May 6th, Souths headed to Kondinin to take on the KK Vipers. The weather was not as you would think, hockey is a winter sport though the temperature was like that of a warm summer’s day. Everyone kept well hydrated and were all relieved when the final whistle blew.
Great effort all players Scores for the day as follows,

C grade lost 3 nil Award to Gabrielle
B grade lost 3 nil Award to Trish Leo
A grade won 2-1 Goals Tahryn & Anna Award to Shaylah Medlen.

Thanks to Anna, Tracy and Trish for umpiring. This Saturday we play at home (Lake Grace) against Bruce Rock.

Ducks lift despite loss
The Dumbleyung Ducks played Olympians 1 on Saturday 6th May, forging a strong contest against the Katanning Club. The first quarter was neck and neck with Olympians 1 only just gaining the lead.  Lou Dare dominated the goal keeper position, the first time to play in this position throughout her long netball career!

The second quarter saw Olympians 1 extend their lead by tens goals with our Ducks answering their lead in the third quarter scoring eighteen goals to Olympians 1 ten.  This set the scene for an exciting fourth quarter where Olympians 1 leading by two goals.

Our Ducks played to their best, keeping spirits high throughout the final quarter but their great fight was not to be with Olympians 1 getting away to secure the win.  It was a mighty effort by the girls and they should be very proud of their game.

The final score: Olympians 1 (57) to Dumbleyung (43).  Best players for Dumbleyung included Chloe McDougall, Hanna Chiswell, Lousia Dare and Carly Smith.

Round three, Saturday 13th May see Dumbleyung play Kojonup 1 on court 1 at 1.30pm.  Hope to see you there to cheer us on!

** Apologies to Elspeth Smith who was accidently omitted from the team list in last week’s article.

A great day sponsored by Dumbleyung Engineering, Nick Green, with a good crowd vying for the meat packs. A hidden combined Stableford was played with 81 points being the winners for the day.  It did look a bit suspicious when the men's Captain, Jamie Dare, drew the top man and woman's scores out together.  Congratulations to Eric Gossage (Bionic man) with a great 78 off the stick, 44 points and Tamara Bartram once again shooting a 91 - 37points.

Runners-up were Bob Hannah and Lee Smith with 70 points, Gross Dave Wall and Liz Dare. Novelties were won by Lee Smith x2, Dave Wall, T Bartram and Howie Ward.  The Birdie hole was the highlight for the children as they were all hoping their Dad or Grandad would win and the suggestion was that they might give them the money, with Sarah Ward drawing the winning hole, yes; you guessed it, won by her Dad, Paul.

A wonderful array of cakes was made by the children with Tania Kirk, being the Master Chef of the Day. We wish Kevin Powell all the best for his op and changed his day so he and Sharlene can come out and enjoy the Golf with us. Next week will be sponsored by NEXTUS Steve Westbrook with a Stableford.
