The championships of the fours and singles of the South Central Arunga Bowling League were played last Saturday and Sunday at the Newdegate Bowling club. On Saturday, Kukerin’s ladies team of Bev Davidson, Debbie Smith, Claudia Faulkner, and Jenny Joyce were unfortunately beaten by one shot in both of their games, losing first to Kulin and then Kondinin.

In the men’s event, the team of Clive Bahr, Tim and Jon Adams, and Graeme Taylor were able to go through the day undefeated to be declared League champions for 2016-17 (pictured left). This was the first time Kukerin had lifted the league fours trophy since 2004-05.

Sunday saw Kukerin’s Bev Davidson play well enough to go through undefeated and become ladies League champion for the season. In her first game she defeated Sandy Knill of Newdegate in a marathon game 25-23. Bev then won her next game against Jenny Browning from Kondinin and in the final was able to overcome Jill Fotheringham of Karlgarin.

The men’s event proved to be a thriller and Kukerin’s Clive Bahr played well enough to reach the final in two very hard fought close games. First beating Len Keighley of Newdegate narrowly and then in a hard fought win over Bradley Crisp of Kondinin by 25—24. In the final, Geoff Sabourne gained a comfortable lead early, but Clive fought back and as the game was drawing to its end the power went off with Sabourne leading 24-23.   Play resumed when the power was restored and Sabourne was able to gain the one shot needed to win and become League champion for the season.

President Eric Gossage would like to sincerely thank all those who were able to attend the busy bee in his absence. "A great turn out and fantastic job.”

No floatation devices were needed for the first pre-season hit last Saturday, however water was sighted in places never seen before (having a slice on number 11 will prove interesting for some time yet and unusual debris was located on number 18).

There were some prickly situations around the course but this didn't sway Holden Scramble winner Cheryl Snell (pictured above) who showed the guys how it’s done with a fantastic 41 points. Perhaps wearing the coveted shirt on the day assisted. A photo of the card was taken and promptly sent to husband Ron!

Runner up was vice Captain Lee Smith with 37 points.

It was great to welcome back international member Brian Lynch who commented that the Irish courses were much easier.

Another pre-season hit is on Easter Saturday for those around. Opening Day is on Saturday 22nd April. Members look forward to seeing everyone back at golf again, along with anyone who would like to come and have a hit and join in the fun.
