Dumbleyung Bowling Club
Our Opening Day was surprisingly well attended given the fact that quite a few had an 80th birthday in Perth to attend. Thirteen played in what was a relaxed and fun day of scroungers followed by an exciting ‘winners take all’ triples competition organised by Kitty, to finish off the day. Well done to the ladies, Karen Ward, Helen Gooding and Liz Dare for defeating the men and getting in some team bonding before their two days in Kulin this week. It did not go without notice that the men outnumbered the ladies. Well done guys!!
The club welcomes on board new resident to town, Glenn Pantall. Living next door to the bowling green should ensure Glenn will be a sharp addition to the men's teams.
Corporate Bowls begins this Wednesday 10th and runs for 4 weeks. Starting at 6.00pm and ending sharp at 7.00pm. Short and sweet with light tea available after. A great way to introduce yourself to this game.
Subs are now due…$75.00. Your new treasurer was most impressed by the rapid uptake of payments. Thankyou. Don't forget, if you want to pay online the details are BSB: 066515 Acc/nos 10141689. Otherwise, catch up with me any time soon.
An email has been sent to all members outlining our club’s position and comments for the Shire’s Sport and Recreation Plan. Please get back to me if you have anything else you would like included here. Remember, it is being sent on your behalf so it's important that you have your say. Alternatively, everyone is free to send their own submission to the CEO at the Shire.
If anyone is not receiving my group texts, as I think this will be my preferred method for club communications, please let me know.
Here's to good bowls, good camaraderie and lots of fun.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to AUDREY BATEUP who celebrates a special birthday today (Wednesday). We hope she had a great rockin’ and rollin’ time on her trip around New Zealand.

Lakeview Golf Club
1990-2018 and beyond
It is with great pleasure that the Committee and Members would like to induct Eric Gossage as a Life Member of the Lakeview Golf Club.
Eric Gossage arrived into Dumbleyung on the arm of a young Dongolocking girl, Davina Wilmott who Eric made an honest woman out of and married in 1990 and also moved to the Dongolocking family farm in 1990. From that first year of living in Dumbleyung, Eric joined the Lakeview Golf Club and then soon was elected to the Committee of the Golf Club in 1991 and has since remained on the committee, filling various roles in the club and in the Men’s Golf Association.
Eric had his start playing golf at Serpentine and had the honour at a young age to score a hole in one on his home course. Eric then repeated the feat at Lakeview on Hole no. 5 in 1996.
Eric’s involvement began as a committee member and then he took on the Secretary’s job for 5 years from 1994-1998. He took a break but was back as Secretary for another 5 years, 2003-2007. In 2009 and for 4 years Eric took on the role as Men’s Captain. In 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Eric has been and is Club President.
During these years, Eric also would attend meetings on behalf of Lakeview at the Great Southern Men’s Golf Association. In 2009 & 2010 Eric was Junior Vice President of the Great Southern Men’s Golf Association. 2011 & 2012 he was Senior Vice President and 2013 & 2014 he was the President of the Great Southern Men’s Golf Association, even though he got away without wearing a tie at most of the presentations that he was required to attend! He was also the Great Southern Men’s Golf Association’s Delegate to the Western Australian Men’s Golf Association from 2013 through to 2018, 6 years so far!
Eric is a great supporter and ambassador for Lakeview at other clubs’ Open days, the Sand Green titles which opened many doors for Lakeview and other club members and 20 plus years attending Men’s Country week. Two years ago, at the 2016 Country week, under the tutorage of his brother, he finally made the podium for a prize at Country Week!
He is highly regarded at all clubs that he has played at and gets along well with the other golfers, well most of them as he must have irritated one player from another club as this person put Eric’s electric buggy up on blocks and left it running over night, hoping that Eric would have a flat battery for the next day’s competition. Eric turned up to find that not only was his battery flat, but this act had also burnt out the motor, so he pushed around a very heavy burnt out dead battery and motor and buggy the next day of competition but all in good spirits.
Eric’s behind the scenes work and organizational skills are second to none. He is more often than not, the organizer of working bees for on the course and clubhouse. He is forever tinkering or fixing any of the machines the club uses to keep the course in top condition.
He recently told one of the other boys, not to panic when they went to the new shed as they would find the mower was missing. He had picked it up and taken it home to have something fixed, especially handy when he had a son home who knows how to weld.
Jobs around the course and clubhouse just seem to magically get done of course by Eric and he is especially helpful to the Bar Manager as he always knows when the spirits are on sale.
Eric doesn’t mind doing the shopping for trophies for the Open Days and always picks trophies that everyone wants to win.
Years ago, while in an officer bearer’s position, Eric handled a very difficult situation when an accident happened at a working bee and worked out all the ensuing problems in a quiet and dignified way and to a satisfactory result although it may have been very difficult for him personally. At this time, he increased the respect and admiration that he already had from members of Lakeview and has helped the club become a very successful and fun club to be part of.
Eric has been known to accept the bus driving job when members are playing at Open Days and on one occasion he was forced to wait for everyone to come out of the pub. Probably getting him into Davina’s bad books for being so late. Eric apparently had a very good win on the Money wheel and was endeavouring to get most of it - money home. When Eric wanted to leave the Palace in Wagin, the boys wouldn’t come out and the moral of the story was “it would have only taken Eric to spring for a carton in Darkan and they would have been home early”!
Eric has been Lakeview Men’s Champion four times, 2004, 2009, 2017 and this year 2018. In recent times, Eric has probably won the most putting competitions that are played a number of times each year. He has maintained a low handicap and is always encouraging to new players and good to play with for 18, well 19 holes of golf.
Eric has had a new knee installed and purchased a golf buggy to keep him motoring around the course and continuing his golfing career.
With all our members and your family here tonight, I induct you as a Life Member of the Lakeview Golf Club and welcome to the Club.
