As we all know, golf is an unusual game and one of the most used sayings is - " If only I stayed on fairway, if only I watched the ball, if only I could chip, putt, drive - the name of the game would be called ‘IF ONLY’.
This of course did not deter the final winner for the men, Acting Captain for the day, Lee Smith with an awesome 87 gross- 69nett, won the Birdie hole-only one to get 2 birdies, a novelty and the Monthly Mug. It must be the added pressure of being Captain that spurs him on, or he just didn't have a day of ‘IF ONLY’. (Scribe overheard that he did once have 16 strokes on No 15 but he was very young at the time??). Runner up was Eric Gossage with 83/71 and he did have a few "If only’s" in that great score. It was mentioned that Eric, who quite often wins the putting comp, did not even get close, probably a 1st in a long, long time that he hit 30 putts- some of us should be so lucky! Gross was won by the ever reliable Dave Wall with an 89.
Women's winner none other than BOSS, Margie Ward in scintillating form, 94 gross 71 nett, and winning the Putting Competition for the 1st time with a very low 26putts, which was a once in a million win for the ladies as they don't even get a look in normally. Margie puts it all down to wearing her cousin’s lucky cap, but some of us believe that it was just brilliant, steady golf and the fact that she can hit a ball an extremely long way. Also we didn't hear of any ‘IF ONLY’ in that score.
Runner-up was Sharlene Powell making her 2nd appearance in the last 2 seasons with 109/76 and taking out 2 novelties. This was a great score which included a 13 on No 17, a lost ball on No 9 for a 9, 3 pars with a close try for a birdie, putting was in fine form and didn't fail her, and there were only a few wayward shots which of course cost her dearly.
Scribe also heard that Jamie Dare once had 17 shots on No 17, so really 13 looks okay. Gross was won by T Bartram. (The ‘IF ONLY’ could be applied to the very erratic golf played, maybe it was the lack of a nice cool drink - as it did warm up over the day).
Next week will be sponsored by Dumbleyung Engineering - Nick Green. Names in by 12.00pm.
