Lower Great Southern Hockey

Picture
Four Dumbleyung girls played and won in the Lower Great Southern Year 7/8 hockey grand final in Albany on Friday night. Charlotte Edwards, Tully Joy, Sienna and Carie Ball played for Great Southern Grammar (GSG) this season and enjoyed the successes of their hard work. Charlotte Edwards scored one of the goals in the 2-1 win. Sienna and Charlotte play in a second grand final this Saturday in the ladies B grade team for GSG. Congratulations!

They say that the early bird catches the worm and that's how the day commenced, hit off for the four players in the finals with beautiful weather to set the tone of the day (we all hoped).  The young guns, Eamonn Lanagan and Stephen Roberts hitting the first balls of the day, Stephen heaving a big sigh of relief getting his ball off the tee and not going in the bush seemed a bonus for him.

It was a challenging day and at the 36th hole Stephen landed a 20 footer to win the Championship for the 2nd year in a row.  The men's B Division, played over 27 holes was won by another even younger gun, Lee Smith defeating Bob Hannah 4/3.  Bob, gallant in defeat, after driving Lee around the course in his buggy - next year Bob may wear him out and make him walk!

The Ladies followed the men as all good women always do  (so  the saying goes) and the score after 9 holes saw Tamara 7up. Davina, the wildflower expert of the course,  just didn't want to miss any wildflowers in the bush and on all but 2 holes achieved this feat. Things quickly changed with Davina deciding that if she was going to win this comp she need to lift the standard and this she definitely did, by only being 7 down after 18.  After a nice lunch, with husband Eric supplying Pizza for his wife, Davina continued to burn the course rarely going off the fairway with her drives with the 3rd 9 holes seesawing with many chances going begging by both players. Davina actually having a 46 off the stick for this 9.

The final score  saw Tamara winning on the 12th hole -  8up.  Congratulations to all players and thank you to Eric who came to watch everyone hit off and took the photos. The afternoon competition was won by  Ronnie Ball, runner-up Liz Dare and Gross Cheryl Snell.  The men by Howie Ward, runner-up making another appearance George Bartram and Gross Eric Gossage.

Next week 17 September will be a Combined Stableford with players vying for the Wagin Meats sponsorship  - Meat packs which are proving very popular.  And last but not least the following Saturday is our Closing Day.

Dumbleyung Men's Hockey Club

A nail biting game and they’re off to the grand final! Dumbleyung played Wagin Friday September 9 on the turf in Narrogin. A close game, the teams played goal for goal with a score of 2 all and only minutes left before the final siren. The final minute played to Dumbleyung’s advantage with only seconds left when Courtney Bairstow swiftly moved passed Wagin to score the winning goal. A great effort by the whole team and great goals by Shane Hall (1) and Courtney Bairstow (2).

A great victory! The club will now pack into their limo and head to Narrogin on Saturday September 17 to play Warriors on the turf and (fingers crossed) bring home the Men’s B-Grade Hockey flag for the Upper Great Southern Association.

Good luck boys!!

Kukerin Dumbleyung Football Club

It’s been a great season! Though unfortunately it didn’t end on the high we had all hoped for. The final score of the Upper Great Southern Football Grand Final was Kukerin-Dumbleyung 5.9-39 to Williams 17.13-115. The Cougars came out fighting but after a goalless third quarter Williams knew they had it in the bag.

Well Done to Jon Ward who soared above the rest for mark of the day! Goals to K.Monteath (1), K.Gooding(1), R.D’Alton(1), G.Bolt(1) and J.Ward(1) and best on ground to K.Patterson, R.D’Alton, S.Pearce, P.Joyce, J.Doney and J.Carew-Reid.
