Well, well captain organised bowls in Darkan to start early, 9 o’clock – we beat the chooks out of bed! Russel Hall took his car, got a flat tyre and Goofy was sitting on that side – you can guess who got the blame?

It was 30 degrees when we started and 40 degrees when we finished, 1.30 refreshments were delicious. Four ladies filled in – thanks ladies! Teams were S.Hughes, J.Hughes, ‘Boo Boo’ and Rowdy Bateup who won the money. Captain Russel Hall was my skipper, I can’t remember when he had done it last - a long time ago if ever.

Other teams were R. Hall, A. Bateup, G. Lathwell and Goofy; C. Henry, K. Ward, M. Lathwell and B. Hannah.

Guys and gals from Dumbleyung went over to see Tiger Woods playing golf, he spotted someone in the crowd “G’Day mate. Where do you come from?”  I am Graeme Jose. I live in Dumbleyung. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Dumbleyung Bowling Club.

The ladies and men’s League pairs and triples which were to be played last week-end were cancelled owing to the extreme heat over that period of time.

The league selectors met last Friday to select the team to represent the League at the Inter League Round Robin carnival to be played at Emu Point Bowling Club from 10th to 12th January next. Congratulations are extended to Tim Adams, Clive Bahr, Peter Davidson, Matthew King, Graeme Smith, and Ross Ditchburn on their selection for the event.

Next Saturday Kukerin travel to Kondinin in continuation of the pennant competition.  This promises to be a tough encounter as Kondinin have been the powerhouse of the competition for many years especially on their home green. There will be pennant practice for those that can be available on Friday afternoon from 5.00 pm.

Finally as this is the last report for 2019 we wish all bowlers and the general public a safe and peaceful Christmas and a Happy New year.  Bowls events will be notified via the social network over the break.

Saturday December 14th and the Dumbleyung grass tennis courts was the place to be. With the forecast for some rather warm weather, instead of cancelling it was decided to start a little earlier and cut back the games played from the traditional six to five or four games depending on the numbers within the grades.

And it worked well. All children got to play some good tennis, some missed out on singles but had a large round robin group and others slipped in a few singles to ensure they got the best out of their time and the courts.

Thank you to the players and the parents for being so flexible, 58 matches were played and even though it was a little hectic in the morning getting the first round out it all ran beautifully. Thank you to our President Jamie Dare on being available for set up and running on the day. Greatly appreciated to have the support to ensure we organised the best tennis for all and help it run as smoothly as it did. Thank you to all the senior members that helped with the set up Friday night and even dropping in homemade jam on the day.

Special mention to all my helper umpires; parents and grandparents, helping with the 11/U grades with scoring and encouragement.

“I was honoured to umpire a few games and the sportsmanship I witnessed was truly inspiring.” Megan Henry said.

That was only one of the many comments I had received from the umpires; others included how the children were lovely on the court, the encouragement and support from both sides of the net was mentioned many times and how they all seemed to appreciate the tennis regardless of the result.

This was especially the case when we had a couple of pairs in the doubles coming in all excited after not winning one game all day but it was ok as this last match the games all went to deuces.

We also had a few grudge matches and character building matches played during the morning which caused for some very good tennis and a few laughs.

Thank you to Rachael Springbett for taking on the catering and all the parents that helped in the kitchen. Special mention to Jane Smith via phone hook-up providing valuable advice for the scone making queen Jamie Dare, Wednesday morning. Apparently scones were required for breakfast and not just morning tea.

Special mention to Dave Wall, our talented Green Keeper, on the presentation of the courts. Thank you.
