The Dumbleyung CRC hosted visiting Cancer Council education officer Melissa Pickering on Friday June 21. Seven people attended the ‘Walk ’n’ Talk’ morning, an event used to encourage active lifestyles and educate community members on what is Bowel Cancer? What are the risks and symptoms? And everything you need to know about the at home Bowel Cancer Screening Test.

The group learnt that up to 90% of Bowel Cancers can be successfully treated if found early which is why the Bowel Cancer Screening Test is so important! By ‘Sticking it to No. 2s’ (your Bowel Cancer test that is!) you can be on the front foot in possibly detecting any signs of Bowel Cancer and reducing your chances of becoming a statistic!

The group enjoyed an active morning, beginning with a morning walk to the Dumbleyung Hospital reserve followed by a delicious and healthy morning tea thanks to along came Henry Café! During morning tea Melissa shared with the group in a casual and informative setting the ‘doo doos’ and the dont’s of Bowel Cancer.

Couldn’t make it? No worries, we took down all the important notes for you!
  • From the age of 50 – 74 you will receive a Bowel Cancer Screening Test every two years. It’s simple and FREE – don’t become one of 17,000 adults diagnosed in Australia each year!
  • The Bowel Cancer Screening test is to look for blood in your poo which may indicate Bowel Cancer. The test itself is not detecting cancer but rather one of the signs - one of the best preventative actions you can take!
  • How can you prevent your chances? Move your body regularly, stop smoking, eat well and avoid alcohol.
  • If you want to know more/need assistance with any type of cancer related diseases (whether for you or someone you know) you can contact the free hotline, 13 11 20. We also have the contact details for Melissa and her colleague Barbara who oversee the Wheatbelt area on behalf of the Cancer Council – just ask us at the CRC!

The Walk ‘n’ Talk morning was made possible with thanks to the Cancer Council – thank you! And thanks to everyone who attended! If you want to know more about Bowel Cancer or any of the other Cancer Council services in the Wheatbelt there are a number of pamphlets available at the CRC or visit https://www.cancerwa.asn.au/ or call 13 11 20.
